Well, in Microsoft's defense, they were naïve enough to think that people on the internet are better than they are. It was people on the net that turned it into a racist twitter bot. They released a newer version with code to prevent that happening, but it doesn't get as much press because racism = page hits, but non-racism = not interesting.
