Everything is said to be ppt but in fact it's a bunch of xml files, image files and stuff - as if it wasn't compiled together...

Yeah for some stupid reason most web servers give office 2010 documents a mime type of zip (they are zip, but loaded directly as such) so if you don't "save as" and keep the PPTX or whatever extension you end up with a zipped file instead of the proper extension.
