Xenon/Xenos benchmarks

LunchBox

Regular
This is more of an inquiry...

does anyone have any realtime benchmark comparisons for the Xenon or Xenos compared to let's say ATI's latest offering or IBM's 970 PPU?

it seems that the xbox 360 is out ad i have yet to see benchmarks for it's parts...

can anyone point me to the right direction in getting stats for the components to quench my curiousity?

any help is much obliged...

Anyway there won't be any benchmarks of these chips, unless they come out of Microsoft directly (and I'm not sure why that would happen). Either that or you find a way to hack the 360, put a fuller OS of sorts on there, and get some benchmarking apps on there.

We're seeing Cell benchmarks because Cell is to be sold to anyone interested. I doubt we'll ever see RSX benchmarks since it's only going into PS3, for example.

it would be quite nice to see...

i guess i have to wait for the russian hackers or the crazy MIT students with a lot of free time on their hands for my question to be answered...

i wonder how long will i have to wait...

With Linux on the system, we might. Anyone could write their own benchmark if they wanted.

although it would be quite kewl if IBM themselves would show what the Xenon could do since it was kind of their idea to do the multi PPU approach...

We might, but what would it mean if that same benchmark couldn't be run on 360? And I think it'll be pretty hard to get Linux on the 360. I also don't see 3DMark07 or whatever coming to these consoles. ;)

I'm a big fan of benchmarks, but I think if you want to compare the PS3 and 360's power down the line, you'll basically just have to do it via developer achievement milestones and your own two eyes.

i'm more interested in their talk about general processing...

is why i wanted it to be compared to the 970...

just to see what they were refering to in terms of brute force or efficiency...

Who said anything about comparing? ;)

From that POV, the most we could hope for would be some leaked paper from a publisher, like that one which I believe came out of EA a few years back that had figures for different systems.

i remember that document...

it was quite a good and interesting read :)

once the 360 is modded there won't be a problem putting linux on there.

Scooby I *know* you are looking forward to your modded 360 paradigm-shift, but I have to say even though I think it'll get done, it has to be easily achievable enough that the same community can build around it. Microsoft just may have succeeded this time in making it too difficult for the average tech junky to bother with. We'll see.

I mean but I saw this little news bite on Anandtech and it made me go "Hmmmm...."

Joystiq.com has some information on the security measures employed in Microsoft's Xbox 360. If you're planning on hacking this console, it's going to be quite the chore:

* The flash is encrypted with a per-box key
* The key is stored inside the CPU
* The boot ROM is stored inside the CPU
* Also inside the CPU is a hypervisor that verifies the running state of the kernel, making sure there is no modification (RAM checksums), else the Xbox 360 panics and blows up!
* The CPU contains RAM inside of it to store the checksums
* All interrupt/exception handling is done by the hypervisor
* All code runs in kernel mode
* The emulator for first generation games can be updated via an official Microsoft download burned to CD by the user, though the CDs' content will be encrypted and signed with public key cryptography. The boot ROM is stored inside the CPU.

wasn't there a "hello world" that was ran on the 360?

Was there? If so it flew under my radar, but that'd be good to know. Dev kit or the console itself though? Well which reminds me, are those stolen dev kits still in the wild?

Well IMO, one of the mod-chip companies that now have millions of dollars will invest in some engineers to reverse engineer this thing, it only makes sense. First one to mod it is rich.

Also, MS's promise of 'nobody can hack this machine' never helps their cause ;)

Honestly I can wait though, the stock 360 is sucha kick-ass machine software wise, the only thing I wish it did was play DivX but other than that it doesn't really need to be modded. I can't wait to see how they polish it/upgrade dashboard over the next coule of years

That's some *serious* reverse engineering this time around though. Ah well hey, if it gets done, good. If it gets done soon, great. I'm on the fence about getting a 360 and the games aren't doing it for me. Plus since I get a lot of games on PC, I don't need the 'console is cheaper than PC' thing for a bunch of PC ports. BUT, Geometry Wars alone is having me consider the thing, and if it could be cracked so I could do my own hard drive upgrades and put an OS or something on there, I'd probably get one right quick.

On the other hand though, if Geometry Wars Evolved could be ported to PC... ;)

Speaking of... DeanA, nAo, Deano or any other PS3-related dev party reading this, that's something I'd definitely like for PS3, just a sort of awesome gameplay super simple game like Geometry Wars Evolved. Get it in there!

I know I read it somewhere but I can't find it, but after reading your quote from Joystiq.com, I doubt that it actually happened at all. Thats alot of secuirty features @_@
