Xbox Live VIP?

But it would be an ancillary feature for a very small group of people. You couldn't market it as a major feature the way Sony can crow about 256 person MAG servers. It's questionable as to whether the added cost of developing a dedicated option would be justified in any way. 3rd parties certainly won't see any of the additional Live revenue so why would they pay a little to make a mode that will be indistinguishable to the peer hosted version when seen side by side, or pay a lot for a more impressive dedicated server mode which will probably have little effect in increasing sales.

Dedicated servers certainly are distinguishable from p2p. I get virtually no lag on dedicated servers while it's a common thing on p2p. It's not just about being able to have many more players playing at the same time. And p2p often gives unfair advantages to the host in twitch reaction situations which is very noticeable in Gears of War.

Adding support for Microsoft's dedicated servers shouldn't cost third parties that much. Every console already has certification requirements and this would just be another.

Hmm...I'm curious to know more about this. I'd like to reserve judgement to see if it's true, and if so, what it offers.

I dont see the point of online storag either, other than maybe slightly more cohesive organizing of your stuff.

Game save backups (preferably automated, with adjustable schedules). I'd upgrade for that reason alone. Along with the added bonus of eliminating the need for external media to go between 360s with my save data.

Online storage of savegames is a long overdue feature. Could have completely foregone the need for memory cards. It's something they should have implemented back with the original Xbox.

I like a combination of a local and on-line solution.
Local for when I travel and do not have access to the Internet and on-line for when I'm home.

I would rarely need the local solution, but it is a nice option to have for those times.

I'm surprised it's taken so long to get online game saves implemented considering Windows Live Gaming has had this feature for quite a while now. Although, anytime there's a network outage that prevents someone from accessing their Live account, there's a considerable amount of flack.

Rumor going around is a revamp of live.

silver -

Online gaming limited amount of players and buddy list
Still get demos and expansion packs / dlc later than gold

Gold -
Requires a higher connection speed than it currently does (somep eople can play with 56k )
Dedicated servers
Larger budy lists
Better tools for blocking users that you don't want to play with.

thats what the ms rep has been saying. They also said there are more suprrises instore for e3 , they were very happy with how netflix worked out and may be ready to announce another streaming service.

Still makes me wonder how they'll do the dedicated servers thing. Won't it require a patch? Can/will Microsoft strongarm, say, Activision into patching them in? Or will it just be like PS3's trophies: after a certain date, all games will ship with dedicated server support?

it will just be an option with new games. The way i understand it is that the new halo , cod and a few other holiday games will have dedicated servers. It wont be retroactive unless the dev makes a patch

That makes sense and doesn't seem too unlikely. Will Gold users be able to invite Silver people to play with them on dedicated servers, or will Gold users be forced to slum it to play with their friends?

don't know anything about that . I just know what the regional xbox rep told me which is most likely a step above a regional gamestop manager.

I would assume to make money ms will make gold members slum it when playing with live players.

Also as i said , i heard that sliver members will also be limited in the amount of players in a room. So say COD MW 2 lets gold members play 32 players on dedicated servers and 16 on p to p silver members may only get to play with 8 players p to p

 At least I would be happy that silver members get to play online at all.

Not to say this is what's going to happen or even being considered, just a random train of thought...

But would be interesting if P2P online gaming was dropped down to Silver level and Gold level received dedicated servers...

Not something I think is going to happen as MS would lose a small bit of Live revenue stream. But it's interesting to think it's a possibility if they felt any pressure from PSN.

Wonder if the revenue they'd lose would be made up by more people buying DLC for on-line play. I can see the logic in the early days of the service to have people pay for on-line as there were not that many people or much DLC, but now it would be interesting to run the numbers and see what a good balance point is. As much as I like my xbox I still think having to pay for online gaming in this form is really dumb.
