I'm suprised they are saying the drivers aren't mature yet. I would expect them to have fairly good drivers if the card is about to be released within 2 weeks.

Unlikely, the 7800 GT is marginally faster then the X850 XT in general as well and costs $450 atm. ATI could offer the XL at $400 and the XT at $500 and be quite competitive.

So, I wouldn't use word "marginal". And for a fact I know that a GT price of one OEM maker (one very popular brand is usig their cards) for 7800GT is only 250 USD (this is not price for end users!)

Yes, the 7800GT is faster overall but in many benchmarks especially with high res and AA it is actually slower. Overall I would call the performance advantage marginal.

An approximate 600 marks difference in 3dmark05 is what I would describe as marginal. Funny how you only listed Doom 3 as well.

What drivers were being used for the 7800GT and what quality setting ? I only mention that because of course earlier drivers had a bug in them for the 7800 series.

However, the main contention with your "facts" is that you have cherry picked your results ! You can easily cherry pick the other way to show what you want......

In some of those titles, yes. Plus, the X850 XT PE not only has a higher shader rate, but more memory bandwidth than the GT.

A combination of both will see it peg the GT in more than a few shader-heavy tests. See here, here and here. Athlon 64 4000+ for those tests, 1GiB of memory, nForce4.

It's definitely not a wholly sensible upgrade from X850 XT PE with the average CPUs, unless you need SM3.0 for a game you like, or want to take advantage of G70's (arguably) better image quality due to TAA, or form factor influences your buying decisions (as it should). The GT is a better physical proposition (cooler, quieter) overall.

As for those X1800XL numbers, either their CPU is middling or they're just guessing. If they REALLY did have one up and running, they'd be talking about other stuff really.....

The performance isn't what wholly defines that part and there's much much more to talk about if you actually have one up and running, IMHO.
