"Now 1MB may seem like a paltry amount of texture cache, but Flipper can use S3TC texture compression, with a compression ratio of 6:1, effectively turning that 1MB into 6MB"

Now Wii most likely has the same( or better) S3TC 6:1 texture compression as the Gamcube. Meaning that even if the amount of Texture memory on the Wii was increased only to 2MB instead of 1MB, the Wii would have more onboard memory (12MB) than even the xbox 360 which has 10MB.

Wii also being an SD only system, that would mean the Wii has more GPU memory than it will ever need. Wii also does not have the same bottleneck as the GC with it's small disk space. Wii games can have more textures because the disk space is huge compared to 1.5 gigs. Perhaps we will see future wii games with full screen AA and other impressive effects.

The Nintendo Wii will use the same NEC eDRAM for its graphics processing as the Xbox 360, NEC has revealed today.

10MB of fast RAM, embedded in the graphics chip, allows enough buffer space for anti-aliasing to be added to graphics 'for free'.

Discuss.

First of all, the eDRAM is not for texture storage on the Xbox 360. It's for the framebuffer. You're comparing two different things, so there is nothing really to discuss. I suggest you read the WiiGPU thread and the Xenos article first.

The s3tc is an old technology,it is supported by every graphic ic (even by the xbox1 gpu).Right now the industry have more advanced texture compression methods.

Do you remember for the old s3 savage3d with the 8 megs mem?that was the first card that's used the s3tc.

Hmm the way they talked about it during the GC launch made it seem like new technology... That sucks.
