Why would I want wifi in my console?

USR were the the leading modem manufaturer during the dialup boom. They're a huge network communications company especially after they merged with 3Com.

Anyway, the point wasn't to badmouth wifi or anything. I was merely bringing up some of my experience with it as it certainly isn't going to replace a standard LAN network in many homes (at least for those that use the LAN for more than simple internet browsing). IMO it would be good enough for future consoles to be shipped with a ethernet port and leave the wireless as an option for those that want it. I guess if it has to be on board, then I'd hope that the ethernet port isn't removed.

I totally disagree, wif-fi is cheap now gives good enough link quality for most people and is a better option for consumers built in than as an expensive extra.

I agree. Nextgen consoles are forward looking, not legacy devices.

Wireless is simply the easiest form for consumers to adopt so that's what manufacturers are going to use I would think.

Little 8 year old Tom gets a Nintendo Revolution and a WiFi router for christmas. Dad spends 5 minutes setting up the console and router and goes back to relaxing.

Dad who knows little about internet security had a knock on the door from the police and taken down to the station. Little did dad know that the man next door with his WiFi enable laptop was using his WiFi access to download kiddie porn or illegal music downloads from P2P networks.

Could this type of thing happen?

If it's happening then everyone who's using WiFi is shitting bricks....

Why don't you ask the members here who are using WiFi and see if it has happend to them. ;)

hmm not so far - I have a firewall and 128 bit encryption on - some average Jo neighbour is not going to get in. If a real hacker wants to get in to my pc, why is w-fi any difffernt to a normal connection?

Most people on Beyond3D are to internet savvy. I am talking your average Joe that has trouble setting up the TV and VCR.

Image a dodgy neighbour that is stealing your electricity and internet bandwidth :p

I am not talking about getting into your PC. I am just talking about using your WiFi router to access the internet.

then he is not going to buy a router is he!
Sure he will, his kid wants to play online. He will get one of his mates that knows everything but knows very little really, to set it up.

It doesn't matter what you're talking about because you don't know what you're talking about.

If it's happening then it's already happening since WiFi has been available for YEARS. WiFi is the future CAT5 is not. ;)

Your example above is WHY wireless is the way to go. Because you don't need to do much to set it up. Plug in the console, voila. Done, you're hooked up (assuming you have the other required infrastructure already in place).

When is the last time you've heard of someone hacking WEP or AES? Your argument seems to be based on the theoretical, 'Could it happen?'. And the answer, well hell yes, it could. Yet I could hack into your current CAT5E network now and turn your PC into a zombie but why don't I see you running to unplug your PC?

In other words, you're over estimating the danger and thus tossing out the benefits.

I don't even think one of my neighbors could get into my WiFi network, I can barely get a signal going 2 rooms over so I doubt next door can get anything.
