Why pre-order?

i personaly preorder just so i can pay things off slowly . so for the old republic i figure the collectors edition will be $100 bucks or so. i already put $5 down at gamestop and am now up to $50 and i reserved a second verison and will start paying more down. once a week i normaly end up skipping lunch out so i have a few bucks to put towards it instead of buying something stupid.

i'm sure gamestop loves it cause they get cash up front and put it in a bank account to collect intrest and i'm sure some people forget all about it and never pick it up so its just free money for them. for systems they take $50 bucks and keep it sometimes for a year in advance

According to someone who works in Gamestop, at least in Florida, they have to keep that money in trust and they cannot actually spend it. The only gains would really be interest on the sum and nothing else. However actually managing the money and keeping track of it would probably mean they just break even there.

that isn't true , gamestop will routinely every x amount of years clear out old reserves. They will call the phone numbers and snail mail home addresses and when able email or text the people now.

For me as a consumer if I know I will be getting a game I really want and am willing to pay full price at launch for then it benefits me by preordering and getting whatever bonus that comes with it, so from a consumer perspective it could be beneficial. Also in some cases I can sell the preorder "bonus" on ebay if I have no need for it which means I'm getting some money back and/or paid less than full price for the game. These preorder bonuses can fetch good money because sometimes they're rare and limited edition items such has an action figure or other collectibles.

This happened to me last month. I received an email and text that I had a credit. Originally I thought it was spam but turns out I had $31 in credit. What is irritating for me is that I can't use the credit online according to the T&C's. So I'll probably forget about it again...maybe I can gift it to someone.

you have to watch out , if you don't respond after the next call they will take it.

I'd just go in and buy a game or reserve something far off that you might want

Cant you just save up the money yourself then pay it all down? Dont see why you would put down the extra money to gamespot after the $5.

Lol, I'm amazed that in the US of all places you can legally take other peoples' money and offer nothing in return... ;) Without going all RSPC about it (which would be forbidden), once you've placed a reservation deposit, there's no chance of you getting that money back? Even if you never actually go through with the purchase you were reserving?

Wow. Around here, whenever I make a reservation they just write down my name and phone #, and that's it. I don't pay nuttin, and that's how I like it. :)

No you miss understand .

You can go and take back your deposit at any time before or after your reserve the title. After like 2-3 years from when the item was supposed to be picked up they will contact you multiple times in those 2-3 years . If through all that they are unable to contact you and you do not go and take the money back or move it tosomething else they will remove your reserve and then you loose the money.

I guess its like if you leave $15 bucks at my house and 6 years later come by and say hey dude can i have my $15 bucks back and I'm like wtf dude I spent that years ago

They give you some goodies if you preorder. I only preorder if the game is rare (not popular, ie I need them to get it in for me) or if I like the goodies they gave out. If not it's pretty pointless to me, but I know it's good for retailers to judge interest in a title.

Now what I don't understand is collector's edition that's really expensive. Like the Killzone 3 one, that's insane.

At mediamarkt if I preorder I get a 5% discount, apart from sometimes extra stuff like codes, metallic boxes, etc. They send and sms or call when the game is in store. They are often as cheap or even cheaper than any online retailer for launch titles.
