Who is dropping the Next Gen ball?

Yeah basically. Think about all the best games on the 360 today or about to come out! Now think about it. Most of them have something in common. They are not using last gen engines. Lost Planet, Gears, Mass Effect, Dead Rising, PGR 3, etc.

Well since PGR3 was a 360 launch game then I guess that's the first next gen game ;)

Anyways, conversely, who is winning the next gen ball? My guess would be Capcom. Way to go. I think this will make other prominent Japanese developers take more notice that they need to be really multiplatform devs in order to succeed in next gen and future gens.

Capcom initially expected Dead Rising to sell 660,000 copies by the end of 2006.

Now Capcom announced that Dead Rising sold 930,000 copies by the end of September.

Capcom is really paving the way, and going with a more western approach when it comes to game development that will pay off in the end. Well, actually it's already paying off. Japanese devs in particular need to make games that will be greatly accepted in markets outside Japan (Dead Rising) in addition to going multiplatform (Resident Evil).

I'm really disapointed in Namco, they seem to be going down hill. They didn't really have a decent grasp of UE3 as Frame City Killer looked like a high rez PS2 game. The Tekken trailer was horrible as well because they were using PS2 assets. RR7 is ridge racer and it doesn't look special at all.

It seems like developers are waiting to pick their horse because consumers have yet to pick. Wii for price or PS3 for power. Too many unknowns. then after consumer pick one, will developers choose earning (wii) over creativity (360 & PS3)?

And even if Wii is to best deal, we still don't know if consumers will even like that controller. I for one dislike it already...:???:

I guess we will have to wait unitl late 2007, early 2008 to answer a lot of thew questions we have.

Well, when you wait until 2006 to put your first bump-map in a game, you're bound to look a little bit behind the curve. Did you play Star Fox Assault? The last level of the game had this "Every single Gamecube shader effect we could think of" look. It was quite painful.

Someone said Capcom is "paving the way" and I totally agree by their Annual Report for 06 here on pg 9:

In view of the anticipated market growth beginning in 2007, we have initiated the development of several new titles including the latest in the "Resident Evil" and "Devil May Cry" series intended for next generation consoles.

In order to curtail development costs, we intend to implement a multi-platform strategy of marketing a single title for a number of different types of games consoles...
