When will DeltaChrome arrive?

Based on the specs reported earlier this year, I am personally looking forward to this chip. Anyone have any info. on its current status? I'd really appreciate some input. Thanks

Wasn't the release slated for July or August? Surprising press blackout if it is, unless they're looking at a NV30-esque paper launch then.

I seem to remember a September avaibility date. My memory could be playing turns again, though...

The 128-bit memory interface sounds disapointing, however S3 is supposedly using a non-tiling deferred rendering technique. S3 still claims over 1500+ 3d2001 marks. I'm still a bit confused over an estimated transister count of only 45+ million, it seems a little off for an 8-pipeline chip but I am no engineer.

they are relying on software to emulate some of the functions if they only have 45M tansistors.

45M? I remember reading something like 75M or 80M... Any link for that number?

even with that many I would still guess that something will have to be done in software....

S3 please come back we need more competition...

Yes, its going to be really nice a little later this year when we have 4 Top end Cards to yak about.. Or at least hopefully all top end cards.

Delta Chrome
PowerVR Series 5
Radeons
FXs

And perhaps a 5th.. Being Xabre-II

DeltaChrome and Xabre II will most likely not be top end when they are released. According to what I've read it seems as if we will be looking at 9700 np performance and in late 2003 that's going to be in the lower mid end IMHO.
Then again, since they seem to be running late perhaps they will revise their products to some extent.

3dlabs! (p20) dx9 slipstream -> this year, who knows? :)

Indeed.
To be more accurate, the Radeon is Loci / R390 / R420 ( unless it has been delayed ) and, to a lesser extend, R360/RV360
Also, the FXs is the NV40 ( no idea if nVidia will keep the name of GeForce FX for it, they probably will... )

Maybe BitBoys .....

This year? (and that goes for all if not most forementioned future products).

I can't remember where I saw the 45M+ listing. Its been a while so it might have been updated by now. According to some more recent infor I have read, the DeltaChrome was originally designed with the power-saving laptop in mind. This might account for the lower transistor count.

Here's the link for anyone interested http://firingsquad.gamers.com/hardware/s3_deltachrome/page2.asp

FiringSquad talks about 80 - 90 mil. transistors on the 2nd page. On the 1st page they statet that DC ist supposed to only have half the Die-size of ATIs R300. Imho this should be right, if you consider that R300 is manufactured in 0,15 µm and DC in 0,13 µm.

With 80 mil. transistors, I think DC would be very competitive against RV350 and NV31.

But perhaps they are suffering from manufacturing problems at TSMC?

Hello everybody ,

Thank you for this "non-timedemo" related topic and also an interesting one . This 3DMark thing is getting too much for me .

I really hope S3 will do something to get out of the " VIA integrated chipset "-only scene . These guys made some good cards back in the 2D era and even in the begining of the 3d era . They're the inventors of T& L after all .

What I hope to see from them is ... a great competitor for NV35 anf R350 .. sure ... we all want that ...

The thing is that I would be happy if this would prove a good , stable and HQ IQ card that is close to the 9700 NP , not necesarily faster but placed in the 90$-190$ zone ... including all versions .
