What's new in PSP firmware 2.5?

Not seen anyone discussing it so far so feel free to start up some buzz about it! :)

It comes pretty soon after 2.0, I hope it's not a quick release just to kill off any sploits to run "backups" or homebrewn software, and that they added some actual new functionality...

Btw, is it still possible to control the CPU clockspeed via that textfile stored on the memstick trick in the newer firmware versions?

- locationfree player has been added as a feature under network.

- autoselect and unicode UTF-8 have been added as options to encoding under view in the browser menu bar.

- text size and display mode settings of the browser can now be saved.

- the input history of online forms accessed through the browser can now be saved.

- copyright-protected video can now be played under video.

- set via internet has been added as an option to date and time settings under settings.

- WPA-PSK (AES) has been added as a security method under Network settings.

- Korean input method has been added.
nothing worth upgrading imo, im still on 1.5

If they could sell the locationfree av machine for only 49$ i would gladly BUy another psp with version 2.5

I beleive that it was to close the buffer overflow exploit they had found for version 2.0.
So if you want to keep running homebrew stuff then stick with your current firmware.

The additional features are probably of use to only a minority. The biggest change that they could do to get people to switch would probably to either
a) Give the ability to play full resolution movies from the memory stick.
b) Provide a legitimate route to run homebrew.

I am not bothered about running the homebrew stuff at the moment, and I beleive that Sony will eventually legitemise homebrew, so am keeping up to date with official firmwares.

The sony method of software upgrading: We only release upgrades with new exciting tech to plug holes.
Corollary: support your local h4x0rs to get new upgrades from sony ASAP.

they closed it in 2.01. unfotnately for them, i don't think the adoption rate of the latter was very high : )

amen.

btw, re (a) above, one of the new features in 2.50 is that they allow the user to run DRM video (whatever that might mean) off the memstick, so they might have actually taken the step for full res as well. we have to check that.

well, i share your belief, but in contrast to you, maybe because i like to be prepared even when being optimistic about something, i'm sticking with 1.5 ; )

That's for the downloadable TV programs. Forget the site, but they're allowing TV programs and clips etc. be downloaded straight to PSP in Japan and eventually extending elsewhere. These files are copyright and they don't want people copying them and distributing/storing. Hence the files are DRM's onto encrypted MagicGate memsticks so in theory once you download the files to PSP, you can't move them elsewhere and the site's content is protected.

Yes so Sony is creating what Apple has now with the Ipod Video. Just release the material Sony. I'm waiting to buy something. *flashes green money in the air*

Isn't it Paramount who have just released a PSP specific content site? Don't know if there's anything to buy there yet, or just trailers etc. Some studio has though.

Yes I think you're right. That's why I want dumb a$$ Sony to release some downloadable videos on their Sony Connect website. Some real stuff not those 8 little videos. I'm sitting here waiting to spend like $20.

Um...I've got stuff lying around here I'll swap for your $20 if you're really that desperate to get rid of it
