I know of 3 types of cables, Composite,S-Video and Component but I want to know which one is the best and if I get the best one will it make any difference if I dont have an HDTV?

component gives the best quality. s-video comes close, composite is the worse.

What really annoys me that there is no s-video output in PAL GC :devilish:
I would love to buy a GCN, but I will not put up with a composite signal. My TV only has one RGB enabled scart, and I have my DVD player already connected on it. I refuse to buy a crappy scart hub that, and I will not change the cable everytime I want to play GC.
Nintendo has lost at least one buyer because of missing s-video.

well, both nintendo and MS have lost a customer here for not including progressive scan support in PAL machines. something even freaking PS2 has.

Rabidrabbit: Yeah, but frankly it doesn't make a difference because it's PAL! Europeans don't matter!

Hey, Nintendo's philosophy.. not mine. :) At least they're going to have a good fall-winter lineup for European GCN owners. Too bad that they probably won't fix your S-Video problem at the same time..

yeah, can you imagine how it feels when you'd really really like to play the new Zelda, Metroid Prime, Ikaruga etc... and are waiting for F-Zero, FF:Chrystal Cronicles, Twin Snakes, Rogue Leader 3, RE4...
but you know that you won't be able to play them
The GC is even relatively cheap already. Local supermarket sells GC with Zelda for 199 euros.
I wish all those great future GC games would turn out to be rubbish (though they won't :( ), so I wouldn't have to feel I'm missing something great.

Then don't buy a crappy one, I bought a switch for €20. Very solid metal case, 3 full wired RGB scart inputs/switchs ... I did some tests, but I was not able to see any degrading of the RGB signals, no ghost images (prevented by good shielding, I guess). I got a NTSC GC and RGB (modified component cable) is much better than S-Video output, VGA (modified component cable) pro-scan beats them both :D

I've searched the local electronics and AV shops, and all of them have had the same crappy ones, most of them even have just one RGB enabled scart  and the better (at least from the outside) boxes I've found from 'net have been to expensive.
I don't want to spend too much time, money and effort for finding solution to such thing that should've come as standard.
What is the manufacturer/model of your switch? Do they have internet store?

rabidrabbit: SCART hubs are useless, but I have one of these SCART switch boxes and it works much better. I have my cube, DVD player and PS2 connected to it, and the RGB picture quality stays good.

I bought mine from this Finnish site, it was a bit expensive but worth it.

WELL if u feel like that, then maybe u should buy a non-crappy SCART hub.... they dont cost THAT much...

VGA (modified component cable) pro-scan beats them both

yeah.... would be nice if they supported pro-scan here in Europe...  to Nintendo Europe

I CAN NOT FIND A NON_CRAPPY INEXPENSIVE SCART SWITCH HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I'm quite picky when it comes to things that could possibly make my DVD image worse. Even knowing that there is a box that possibly degrades the image, even though I could not easily see any difference, it makes me feel uncomfortable.

> composite is the worse.

Two letters: RF

out of all the ones he mentioned, it is the worst. i was gonna mention RF but i didnt feel it was needed.

NOE has nothing to do with it.

whoever it is. at the end of the day NE must have something to do with it, just like Microsoft had something to do with the fact that pro-scan was cut from Xbox as well. and just like Sony had something to do with the fact that Pro-scan was kept in PAL PS2's....

I've got my GCN hooked up to my 50" with S-video I had ordered thru Nintendo.com (actually had it for my N64). If you dont have an HDTV than S-Video is as good a quality as you'll see. But RCA hookups that come with the GCN are ok if you have a small TV. And yes RF is the pits..i'm still amazed at the amount of ppl that are using that crap.

Unfortunately not. I got mine from eBay, it was sold by a shop, but I don't have the details anymore. I did a quick search, there still many on sale, here is a picture of it. Anyway a friend of mine bought one at a local shop, re-branded for €30, so I guess it shouldn't be too hard to hunt one down.

PAL -- RGB definately
NTSC -- Component followed by S-video.

that will be all
BTW, the modified component cable RGB for NTSC GC works on PAL GC too. The DAC build into the component cable is much better than the default one build into the GC. That cable is a bit pricey ((€|$)50-60) though, but it boosts the image quality by ~25%.

I use a RGB (Scart cable) since I own a PAL GC. As far as I know the PAL GC has RGB but no SVHS support while the NTSC GC supports SVHS but no RGB.

Bingo.

Another small detail, is that for PAL GC's, while progressive scan is disabled, the Digital Video out port is still present and active, so why the hell shouldn't RGB work through it? Just that holding B during startup won't do anything...

I think that if you use a freeloader and a NTSC game then you can use the Digital Video Output, but I am not sure.

I really hope the next gen brings us systems with a VGA out port.
