What improvements will GT4 have over Gran Turismo 3?

I've heard they're working on a damage model. In the end though, it depends on the car manufacturers....

that would be great. Nothing against the racing style of GT, but I wish the next implementation will feature more exciting tracks. Those tracks from NFS1 were awesome... God would I love racing on tracks like those...

Better texture filtering, better AI, slight increase in car details, some online components, 480p and DPL2. Thats about it.

GT3 has pushed the PS2 well, do not expect GT4 to go too far. Like my father always says, dont aim for the sky, look at reality. 8)

GT3 was pushing 45k a frame according Fafalda, not exactly "pushing".

But was it geometry limited?

If I had the choice of trusting our fellow member Chap or a 100'000+ dollar hardware dedicated to messuring performance, I'd sure trust Chap...

Most visually stunning != Most efficiant / technological advanced

Chap's logic is flawed by the fact that GT3 has a lot of effort in artwork which makes it the beautiful racer it is. I'd even argue that it's still 'the' most realistic looking racer on any console. Looking at other racers though (Burnout 2 comes to mind), while perhaps not looking as realistic in terms of visual presentation, I'm sure there are more technological advanced racers out by now that use PS2 hardware more efficiantly than GT3 does.

In the end, your game can have 'x' hundreds of MB of textures per frame and 'x' millions of polygons per second, but if the artwork isn't there, it will still suck.

Well whether B2 is more technically advanced than GT3 is up for debate. There's more to a game than polys and textures. High quality lighting puts a cap on your poly counts too.

And Fafalada also said that GT3 was pushing some heavy multitexturing. Multitexturing that gives the nice reflections, multitexturing that is not too healthy for PS2 hardware.

"Better texture filtering, better AI, slight increase in car details, some online components, 480p and DPL2. Thats about it." -Chap, B3D boards.

I think that is a fair assesment, doncha not think so? ;)

Only for the cars....!!! ;)

as far as I understand, GT3 (like PGR) is rendering several times the scene for doing the reflections especially in the rain scenes. Anyway, looking at the jump WRC-WRC2 or Burnout to Burnout2, we can already guess estimate what we can have for GT4.

If GT4 will have any improvements over GT3?

I'll say;

Better graphics, better physics, online play, download components*, more cars + more cars to download*, new tracks*2,
probably a very nice damage engine, real time weather effects, new racing types(like rally in GT2)...

*= Kazunori Yamauchis plan for GT4 was that players could test-drive cars online before buying them and downloading them into their game.
With the new and believable romours of the long-awaited PS2 HDD to come this year, http://ps2.ign.com/articles/385/385469p1.html , I really think this might happen. :D

*2= KY has also said several times that he wants new type of tracks for the next GT. He has mentioned some ideas of a Hong Kong city track and a track along the French Riviera. Also a new track that certainly will make it into GT4 is Sears Point. Just take a look here, especially post nr.8 http://forum.granturismo.com/showthread.php?s=2774a6c1573d9f89dcd5af28105acac6&threadid=75370 :D

I remeber reading an interview with Polyphony Digital in a gaming magazine aroud the time GT3 was released in 2001. They said that the game was using 60-70% of the machines power, more than most of the games released up until that game. They also said there were lots of things that still could be done.

So I think we will see more than a cople of small improvements with GT4 over GT3. You know, GT4 is actually "the Real GT3", because GT3 is what GT2000 became with a little delay.
