Volvo commercial

Since we've discussed car commercials before...
Have you seen the European commercial for the Volvo S40? I was made aware of it today, and it was a long time since I found so much enjoyment a Wednesday morning. It's built like a documentary depicting the strange event when 32 people in the small town of Dalarö in Sweden (I think it lies slightly to the south of Stockholm) bought the S40 on the same day.

It can be found at www.volvocars.co.uk. I recommend interrupting the automatic playback, going to the download page and download the high quality version. If you can live without the subtitles, that is.

After seeing the movie - but only after, mind you! - you should visit www.carlossoto.com.

All in all it'll probably take a quarter of an hour, but in my book it's time well spent! :D

Brilliant marketing by Volvo, I must say... but I thought the biggest tip off would have been that everyone in that village was perfectly fluent in English ;)

I see on the site there's a doc with english subs.. so maybe the doc was dubbed and that's why u get english speaking citizens?

I'm d/l now :)

Regarding the spoken language, I think that movie gives a quite fair picture of the level of English fluency in Sweden. That is, decent command of the language but some strange pronounciations and a vocabulary distinctly short of a native speaker. It really sounds like Swedes talking English!

In fact, I have read that all of the people in the movie (except the car salesman) really live in Dalarö and the the dialogue was largely improvised.

May I add, it sound like Swedes that aren't used to speek Swedish. But as most Swedes, hear and read (maybe even write) English every day.

If you want a tip off, how about the reindeers south of Stockholm :D. But it won't say much to non-nordic people.

And about what Carlos Soto says on his site. If he realy thought that he made a documentary, this is hillarious.
Concidering his previous projects, he might be the kind of person that want to believe there's somethig supernatural there. :)

LOL
Yes that's what I meant.

I guess I should be more careful when talking about how good Swedes are at speaking English. :D
