Vista 64

Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find any threads using the Search function.

My question is very simple: what are the pros of using Vista 64?

For an exclusively gaming rig (Crysis, etc.), which is preferred: 32 or 64?

Thanks.

The biggest pro is true 64-bit addressing for your memory, which means you aren't limited to 4GB of ram, minus memory addressing space that is reserved for video card drivers, RAID drivers and the like. An SLI-equipped "monster rig" that has 4GB of ram installed may see as little as 2.25Gb of usable ram within Windows 32. The same rig in Windows 64 would see all 4GB of ram -- or more if you wanted to install it.

That's the primary difference.

As for what's preferred? More is usually better, but only if you can get all the drivers. For some older hardware, 64-bit drivers are quite difficult to come by. Nearly all "new" equipment these days has support for 64-bit drivers.

As an example: all the hardware in my 18-month old Dell Inspiron E1505 has 64-bit driver support directly from Dell; humorously it only came with a 32-bit processor ;) I've done a Core 2 Duo upgrade so that I can use the 64-bit OS, but as yet have not actually installed the 64-bit version (still using Vista Home Premium 32)

How is driver support for the 64 environment?

And game performance in general?

Heh, I edited to mention drivers while you were posting.

As for game performance? It really isn't much different last I remember, maybe a slight bit slower on some processors, but it depends on whether you were truly CPU bottlenecked to begin with.

Fine, as long as you don't have exotic hardware (or antic)

And game performance in general?
Running a 32bit game in Vista 64 = at least 10% perf penalty, max should be around 25/33%.

I did a comparison between the same games on the same machine on Vista 32 & Vista 64, don't have the numbers at hand. (not sure I have them anywhere in fact)

With time games should be available running native on Vista 64...

Ergo, if you're a hardcore gamer, stay away from Vista 64.

Agreed?

I'm curious if Crysis and Alan Quake will have 64-bit versions..........

Would be nice to test, today, with more mature drivers, the same games running in 32bits on Vista 32 and Vista 64.
I would have done it, but I bought Vista OEM, so I only have the 64bit version.
(And I found it way overpriced even as an OEM deal, I'll let you imagine about the box version [in europe])

Yeah, you guys get truly shafted on American hardware and software pricing over there it seems. I can't blame anyone in the EU for calling the Vista OS an overpriced hunk, because for what you pay, it probably is ;)

The only 64-bit piece of hardware in my collection is a Dell Inspiron E1505 with very un-inspiring video hardware (the venerable 7300GS with Turbocache! w00t!) I'm not much help there with any "current" games...
