The big story in computer games this year was HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD, by Sony. Its PlayStation 2 was the champ in the last round of the console wars. This time Sony bet on a chip called the Cell and a disc format called Blu-ray. They're probably awesome, but how would anybody know? The PS3 is hideously expensive--it goes for up to $600--and Sony manufactured only a piddling few hundred thousand for the U.S., fewer for Japan. Plus it's hard to write games for; the launch titles were lame. You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii.

Yeah and Gamecube would be dead in a year.

This all sounds too familiar.

First, however, a reality check. PS2 can't actually use any of those connections yet. It can't go online (that's supposed to happen next year). For now PS2 is a fancy game machine, mixed with a lot of hype.
"Sony is a dinosaur," says Kimihide Takano, an analyst at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson in Tokyo. "PS2 is like a bud growing out of the dinosaur, but it's not big enough to save the dinosaur."

Developers say the standards and software in both GameCube and Xbox have chopped in half the time it takes to program a game--at least compared with the PlayStation 2, whose "emotion engine" system is so arcane that it has left a lot of developers badly burned. "PlayStation 2 is like a Maserati: looks great, but every time you take it in for an oil change, they have to take out the radiator," says Lorne Lanning, CEO of Oddworld Inhabitants, who led his Oddworld game from PlayStation to Xbox in mid-development. "The Xbox is more like a BMW."

Chris Gilbert, an executive vice president at Sega of America Inc., said Sony's diminished PS2 shipment was terrific news -- for the Dreamcast manufacturer.

"Once the cheering subsided, we wanted to hammer home our message with retailers and consumers," Gilbert said. "You can have it all in one place with the Dreamcast and you don't have to spend the whole weekend looking for it."

just an aside: just because it seems like PS3 is a repitition of PS2, doesn't mean it actually is. history repeats itself to an extent, but if that were always true, then N64 would have been a huge success, saturn would have rocked, we would be on mars by now, and George Bush wouldn't be the stupidest guy who went to my high school (the last part is true, I think he was class of '74 or something like that; neways he was a cheerleader; nuff said ).

The media likes creating a fuss. Which will make the most impression? Saying that Wii has mediocre games that some look worse than PS2 games? Or that PS3 is crappier, wont do as well as its brothers and is beaten by a weaker Wii?

This is what's great about the internet. From 2000 onwards, everything's being recorded. All these analyst predictions can be dug up in 5 years and their reputation adjusted accordingly. In this case, Time's reporting on PS2 certainy missed the trick.

I would +rep you for this research inefficient, but apparently I need to spread some love around.

Not really, he's only giving us one side of the story.

I'm sure Time had plenty of positive articles on the PS2 over the years as well.

And plenty of stories on burning up 360's, etc.

The only company that gets virtually no negative mainstream press coverage for the past several years is Nintendo.

Then again I wouldn't take much notice of the Time article anyway. Any so called journalist that uses words like "lame" to describe something needs to be fired on the spot..

Dunno how easy that is to find out. GameRankings lists titles, but not by launch, so someone with a list of launch titles would have to fetch the ratings manually I think. It's certainly apparent from the short popular list that's shown for each platform that PS3 edges out.

If rankings are a measure of 'lameness', I'd say sankari has a point, that how can PS3 launch titles be classed as lame when they score at least as well as Wii's? Unless lame in this case was the individual journalists personal opinion.
