Thoughts on the expense of PS3

Call me crazy, but what I see is Sony launching world-wide simultaneously for the first time in their history, and into the teeth of the Christmas season (one week before "Black Friday" in the U.S.). They *know* that they can't fulfill all that demand immediately.

What is the classic mechanism for bringing demand more into line with supply? Price. Further, it is so obvious as to qualify for "duh!" status that they will lose money (just like every other console launch from every other manufacturer in the history of forever) per box on hardware. And just as true that component prices will come down over time. So they want to sell it cheaper at first why, exactly?

Why in the world wouldn't they want to have the price high enuf initially to tamp down demand some anyway? Because they are deeply concerned to allow the ebayers to make their profit, when they, Sony, are losing a bit on each hardware sale? Puh-lease. The fact of the matter is that even at $599 they are going to sell every single box they can make as fast as they can make them in the first 6 months. This is what having a loyal fanbase in the tens of millions does for you.

What I expect is that about this time next year, once that initial demand of the hardcore is met, is when the first price cut comes. And, no, I don't feel sorry for those folks who shell out higher initially --it's called the "time value of money", and they get to strut around their neighborhood making the other gamers crazy jealous for those six months and enjoying the new games. "Hey, Timmy/Francois/Yoji. . .wanna come over to my place and play the PS3 this afternoon? Har-har!"

If I were to criticise them for anything at this point it would be for even announcing the lower priced box yet. I would have advised them to keep that in their pocket for later, as a "caring supplier who heard the cries of the fans" for a cheaper sku, probably timed for about the time of the first price cut predicted above.

That's my read anyway (not that I know anything other than what I see here. . .)

You should add Nintendo DS, PSP, and PS2 there...

Well if we just consdder home console market and ignore the handheld consoles for time being ... maybe we are looking at three mkt. divisions ...
1 . Value Console : PS2, Wii, Xbox360 core ( assuming Wii is priced in that range )
2. Economy Console : Xbox360 Premium , PS3 with 20GB HDD
3. Premium Console : PS3 with 60 GB HDD.

I too am concerned about pricing but from a slightly different angle that puts Sony in a real bind.

First a little bit of history (to the best on my memory) when the PS2 lauched at $299 it was approximately equal in price to a comparable dvd player (that was offered by a variety of companies). This offered an excellent value for the consumer and did not directly alienate DVD player manufactures who had already recouped their development cost on players by then with early adopter sales.

This time Sony is trying not only to launch a console but also a disc format. Unfortunately before any other manufacturers can get blu-ray players on the market at price points near or below the PS3's anticipated lauch price. (According to blu-ray.com players are expected to lauch in June for between $1000 to $1500). Now this seems really good for Sony as they will have a product at a much lower price point than other blu-ray players.

But how long do you think other manufactures will continue to fund Sony's format when they are unable to recover their r&d cost? If Sony lowers the price of the PS3 aggressively as some had earlier mentioned they risk alienating Samsung and Panasonic (+ others ?)who I don' t believe would be too broken up about a Sony Failure.

I think money rules this decision not tech specs or percieved superiority, Add to this a viable competitor that is set on having a lower cost product and I have serious concerns that pushing the Blu-ray feature of the PS3 will result in the sales that Sony is hoping for as they did when bundled DVD with the PS2.

Just my thoughts.
Although I admit you have some good points you have to wonder, can Sony monpolize the BR-player market? I dont think they can. I think other BR-Player companies could gain if Sony succeeds with the PS3.
BR will be established faster, and BR disks will gain more support. When this happens demand will also increase for BR-players.

Companies like Samsung, Panasonic etc as well as Sony can sell stand alone BR dedicated players with better BR functionality. Also these stand alone players may see a faster economy of scale result since they will only have components of a BR player unlike PS3 which has other next gen compnents (Cell RSX) plus others a BR-player doesnt need (WiFi, Bluetooth, Mem SticK/SD/Flash memory Support etc).

For example: currently you can get a PS2 to play DVD movies at $120 but you can also get a $50 stand alone DVD player that plays DVD disks better than PS2, and it can also play JPEG, Video CD and MP3's. PS2 didnt replace DVD players. A PS3 and stand alone BR players can co-exist as two different BR products.

PS3 will be a cheaper BR player for some time but later it will become a more expensive BR-player than can do more than just play BR movies while other stand alone cheaper BR-players will have better and extra functions for playing BR-movies.

how i see this PS3 thing panning out is like this, first start at $600. AT 2K7 E3, announce $100 price cuts to both SKUs.

At xmas 2k7, drop both by $50......$349 and $449 PS3s

At E3 2K8, announce that the cheaper SKU is now discontinued and the PS3 will have a larger 80 or 100GB harddrive and sell for $399.

Possibly drop by $50 for xmas, but doubtful, $399 is a decent price point.

Maybe at the E3 2K9 and then E3 2k10, decrease the prince in $50 increments....leaving the PS3 at $299......i don't think the PS3 will ever drop below this price (maybe a year before the PS3 is annouced, probally 2K12 oe 2K13, the can drop to $249), likewise i doubt the XB360 would ever drop below $199.

Remember, due to inflation, $199 today would be moreless equivilent to $249 five years from now.

Exactly. Sony will keep only the "premium" PS3 after some time. The cheaper is here for the ones that want a PS3 but dont want to pay $600. Its for early adopters that dont care about having the biggest Hard Drive, and the best resolution (most dont own HDTVs anyways). They care about the PS3 in a more general sense.

When costs decrease the complete package will remain with probably even a dual HDMI and a bigger Hard Drive at a cheaper price

Although I disagree MS wont drop the price lower after 5 years. Actually I predict it will be sold at around $150 after 3 years.

You see the PS3 dropping by $100 in six months and another $50 some 6-7 months later, but you don't see the 360 dropping more than $100 (Core) or $200 (360) in its entire life span?

i realized my mistake, its only after i posted i realized that th XB360 has an SKU that sells for $299.

But in any case, i dont see the XB360 dropping to $149 any time soon.

And i do think by Xmas 2K7 you will be able to get a PS3 for about $400
