There is cake: Portal 2

How come that Gabe Newell survived a trip to the Sony E3 press conference? At the very least, the crowd should have turned him into bacon for his statements about the PS3.

At first they were just too delighted that Portal 2 was at the show after all (Valve had been playing a nice game un-announcing the game), then they were too surprised that it was at the PS3 conference, then they were too shocked to see Gabe in person, and then he charmed them by making a Kevin Butler joke about how much Sony hated them. It was awesome.

Does anyone think it's possible we're seeing sub-division surfaces in these videos? Valve has implemented them in source and maybe with dx11 hardware in the wild they'll be using them in realtime. There are a lot of curved surfaces around in these videos...

Thats what I though when I saw one of the videos. Everything was really smooth with lots of curved surfaces.

Don't want to insult Gabe or anyone, but saw this:

:)

This looks great, but 2011...comone Valve release a techdemo or something, I want to see the engine improvements now ! ;)

Hahaha!

Sorry, but he IS a big guy!

Where's this from?

Dunno, saw it on Rage.

Btw:
Valve plans to have cross-platform co-op between PS3 and PC/Mac for Portal 2

When questioned on the cross-compatibility between Steamworks and Steam, specifically playing co-op on a computer with someone on a PS3, he said it was "something the team is gunning for." We also confirmed with Valve developer Mike Dunkle who said "The plan is you will be able to play between console and PC."

I wonder whether they will alow purchasing the game for any platofrm PC/Mac/PS3/Linux in the future and play it on the others?

PS3? Nope. PC/Mac? Steam already works like that.

Yes, I know that PC/Mac works like that. But it would be interesting if you could buy the PS3 version and get all others for free through Steam Play.
Edit: now I see that I'm wrong - http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/63793

However, it turns out that this functionality, referred to as Steam Play, doesn't always extend to all of one's past Steam PC purchases--if you bought a game on Steam PC before it was eligible, you may have to buy again if you want it on Steam Mac.

Thus far, only two of the fifty-plus offerings--Civilization IV: The Complete Edition and Fairway Solitaire--require existing Steam PC owners to rebuy them on Steam Mac if they were bought before "being eligible for Steam Play support (May 12th, 2010)."

To help make matters more clear, Valve issued the following list of the current Steam for Mac games that "offer cross-platform support, regardless of purchase date."

Btw, Portal 2 is the reason why I still have *faith in games as the medium. This is game design at its finest.

^ I've fixed it, thanks. ;)

Listen to that line you monster... genius, that attention to details and charm that characterizes all of the best games ever made.

Apparantly it's up to individual software vendors if they want to let people download and play both platform versions of a game. Seems at least some games need to be re-purchased for MacOS, which is scummy as hell. :(

Then again, why should I care, since I don't own a mac...

I do, and I think it's alright. The porting effort is appreciated. I'd sure like a discount, and I love getting the port for free like in most cases, but every port counts.
