The Order: 1886

So... Knights of the Round Table, speeding around in London in a car, drinking Coke?

Should've been called The Chaos, I guess :)

I haven't been following this game much, it's looking more interesting lately though.

One issue i have is with the black borders, are they going to be in the final release? seems silly to "choose" such a thing.

The letterboxing is for cinematic reasons (dialogue, cutscenes, etc…), while full view is more gameplay specific. You can see this from the online scans...

Hum, I thought the trailer looked good, nothing that the PS4 couldn't handled. Hopefully the extra time will turn eye candy into graphic joygasms!
For me this was the most awesome game of Sony's E3. It looked really good. Other than that I don't know much about the game, I kinda liked the art style and the graphics.

Glad developers breached that info to us.

I'm pretty sure gameplay also has black bars. Every screen I've seen has been 1920x800.

I'm not bothered by it much. Pretty much every movie has a ~2.40 AR and I'm a pretty big movie guy so I'm used to it.

I can't link the scans (no, no, policy)... but there are plenty without the letterboxing. The ones that do have the letterboxing, look more "cutscene" in nature.

Letterboxing is just to preserve the AR. I've seen screens without letterboxing, but they were still 1920x800. While not visible in the screenshot, they would have to be added to preserve the AR. Unless I see a screenshot without bars that is 1920x1080 or a quote for the team, I'm pretty sure there are black bars through-out the game.

Where's MJP when you need him? :)

Letterboxing is to preserve the aspect ratio. All screens I've seen (including screens without black bars) have been 1920x800. Black bars (while not present on the screenshots) will be there to preserve the AR.

I’m not disputing aspect ratio or its nature. We have no actual confirmation of how it is used or applied (story/gameplay/cutscene wise). There are plenty of 1280x720 and 1920x1080 pictures floating around without the stretch distortion (or squashed @720p) that letteringboxing would cause at these ratios. We had plenty of games (initial photo release) on the market that used letterboxing in promoting that cinematic feel… and gameplay usually was/is in full screen view.

If you can provide me with “YES WE ARE USING LETTERBOXING ALL THROUGH THE GAME!" confirmation… then my observation would be incorrect from the photos that I’m viewing. Other than that, we will have to wait on the official confirmation of such nature.

I dont care about letterboxing. MGS games used them only for cinematics, and Beyond:Two Souls used them for entire game and I barely noticed. And when I noticed, it was briefly suprised "how did I not see this in all these hours of gameplay?". This had zero negative impact for me.

As long developers are happy and they want to preserve their vision, I will be fine.

Upgrade weapons with soda attachments : Coke weapons against Werewolves ! Upgrade your horse buggy to a gas powered motor car ! RPG mechanics confirmed !

They confirmed it is always 2.40:1 back at E3 in interviews: http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/ugdcas/the-order--1886-e3-2013--an-altered-history

Cinematic aspect means more cinema-like and less pixels so more power per pixel for those being rendered. It's the same number of pixels as 900p, but without any upscale blur. If the gameplay suits the format, it makes a lot of sense.

Its different from 900p as the horizontal resolution is intact, its 1920X900(800 i think). Horizontally, the full screen is covered, so basically we are getting nativer res on our screen.

Yes, that's why I said it hasn't any upscale blur. It's the same number of pixels but they're native to the display. 900p is a 25% reduction in pixels over 1080p but upscaling adds a slight blur to every pixel. So 'cinematic 1080p' is a choice that enjoys the gain in pixel power of 900p without suffering the blur, at a cost of vertical FOV (which could adversely impact gameplay with notable verticality, like a shooter with buildings where you need to check above you for enemies). Cinematic 1080p would be good for games like the original SW: Battlefronts which was very flat, or a racer.

All I meant to point out was that it is rendering more pixels than a standard 900p,ala BF4 and Ryse, as it is not reducing the 1920 vertical lines, but only reducing the number of horizontal lines fro 1080 to 800. Standard 900p is actually 1600X900=1440000 pixels, while The Order is crunching 1920X800=1536000 pixels. So, it ain't as much reduction in pixels as the other games running at 900p....and yes, your point is of course valid that it doesn't suffer from any blur as it is natively rendering the display res.

As for the Cinematic effect of Black Bars, Beyond did not become any more cinematic due to theos bars, but yes, The Order is anyways extremely well made in terms of cohesive visual, very CG-like, that super interesting use of chromatic aberration on edges is the best ever,so might make it look like playing a movie. As far as my personal choice goes: Give me fullscreen please !
