Wow, looks great. Love the second shot you posted. Can't wait to see this in action.

edit: love this one too:

It looks like they're using some kind of film/photo grain to give it a soft and aged look.

I like the look of it. Good choice of time period. Has a nice art style that's kind of refreshing.

One of the best looking games, the art is very very high quality indeed and the tech is impressive too. However, where are the monsters? :)

keeping it for E3?

Btw, the best "complete visual" to date ! Everything feels almost flawless. and theres no disparity between characters and the environments. Still can't get over that coat of the lady folding so well upon touching the ground. Hope the gmaeplay holds up too ! I am getting "The league of Extraordinary Gentlemen" vibes from it :D !

Can't imagine what Sony Santa Monica would come out with, as they are assisting these guys in tech and they already have some superb art direction in the GOW games.

I think the hypothetical "Nextgenness" scale has just been blown to smithereens ! I think we will need to keep an open mind for what might be possible a few years later  ! Next gen doesn't seem that weak anymore.

What do you make of the chromatic aberration. I think it adds photorealism, but it's overdone (though nothing like the travesty of bloom and lens-flare that some games are bombarding us with!). Game artists don't seem quite on top of the subtlety needed to make these effects really work. Like good audio, they are best when they aren't noticed, I think. then again, maybe they're going for a Victorian camera lens effect?

Character models are are up there with the best of next-gen showings, including shading. We really need to see some animation though to see if it all comes together; we need footage! Love the weapon art. Hope they have a reasonable GI solution or the rest will look out of place. Those torches (flashlights) don't obviously come with any reflected light, but it's hard to tell in that shot. Really want to see video fotoage.

chromatic aberration, film grain, photo lense ... whatever you want to call it ... It deosn't seem to destroy a lot of the fine detail. John Carmack probably would not approve, but I think it looks pretty cool.

I agree, the lens effects are probably overdone to suggest a certain feel. There's always room to push them back a little, but for now they're also helping to cover up small image quality issues (hence the almost no-AA look) and blend various assets together. You're less likely to spot a substandard texture or lowres model this way.

As for the faces, it's very similar to TLOU tech and artistry - but scaled up for nextgen, particularly in the shaders. I think the animation will be fine as well, the expressions listed on the image look pretty good.

I have to say that I am a chromatic aberration hater and I was thinking that it was a bad scanner which was producing those artifacts in the scans before, but when I saw the effect in these gamersyde screens too, I was very surprised ! I have to say, I don't like the effect in games, it gives me headaches, but I also have to say , though too prominent around edges of faces and architecture, it is very convincing as the real thing. The way the whole image is tied together with thee lens effects is working so damn well. We need a video.......but I think we will have to wait very long for that.

Animations of characters were awesome in the E3 reveal trailer, but we need to see them in real gameplay situation.

In one of the interviews, they said they developed an in-game camera lens to simulate realistic lens distortion.

The overall feel – that filmic experience… the one thing we brought to this is something people are accustomed too but usually can’t tell. When you watch a movie you don’t question what lens is being used. You don’t question why there is grain on the film or why there’s a certain lighting. Those are things we’ve been accustomed to seeing for 30 years. So when it’s missing we usually go “Wait, something is wrong with this image”.

With this game we replicated a lot of physical attributes. We have true lens distortion. We built physical lenses into our engine so we could get something where people will look it and not be totally disconnected. Games have a tendency sometimes to be too clean and crisp. We thrive in the dirt. We just love the fact that it feels dirty. It’s filmed in a very realistic way.
