The Last Story

image-128.jpg

This is an RPG made by Hironobu Sakaguchi (1 of the 3 founding members of Square and the creator of the Final Fantasy series) exclusively for the Wii.

It with be a strategic, action-rpg using a battle system called the "focus system" that was developed by Sakaguchi back around the time FF7 was made.

The game will feature multiplayer online and completely customizable clothing for characters.

If all you want to do with cry about it not being on an HD console or make some cloaked racist statements while using the meme 'JRPG" then don't post in this thread and go get some originality. Also, don't come here trying to condescendingly compare it to your more preferred games,

There are no HQ videos of the game so you will have to make due with the low quality.

Here is a 1 hour presentation that was given on Dec. 27
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAyTwZn89e8&feature=related

He is a page with an explaination of the characters and a demonstration of the battle system for those who just want to take a quick look.

The game will be released at the end of January after being in development for over 2 years.

He are some screenshots as well for those who are interested.

Looks pretty interesting. Those enemy targetting lines would absolutely rock in an MMORPG. It would make life a whole lot easier for Tanks, Healers, and CC's. :) As well as letting a raid leader know who goofed up with maybe some time to salvage the situation. :D

Regards,
SB

He said it was MMORPG like especially in the amount of talking your characters do during the missions

They need to hurry up and announce this and Xenoblade for the U.S.. Rune Factory Oceans as well.

This game feels like a mix between FFXII, which adopted some MMORPG elements and introduced the targeting lines, and Gears of War's third person cover mechanics. I seriously can't wait for this game.

Don't insult this game, It looks and feels nothing like FFXII. FFXII just used the ATB system(which Sakaguchi created by the way) without screen transitions into battle and animation witht he characters moving while they were waiting for their turn to come up..

This game is real time action/strategy based with environmental destruction heavy use of the enviornment in combat, how in the world did you get FFXIII from that?

Could be fun. Looks like it would've been a good candidate for texture compression as those textures are screaming to look less flat like something on the PS2. I'm pretty weary of Japanese RPG-ish games these days, as they are mostly tons of flash, with silly looking characters panning out the full range of archetypes but nothing really extraordinary. You can imagine I was severely disappointed with FF13, however there has been one definite gem for me this generation: Lost Odyssey, so maybe hopefully Mistwalker can repeat that success with The Last Story.

This is already beter than the Lost Odyssey. Sakaguchi has made the difference in effort and creativity well known. This is the first game he directed himself since FF6.

I agree that some texture compression wouldn't have hurt as well as some use of the TEV..

I'm still waiting for that game that uses S3TC and the Hollywood TEV to its full extent.

This game looks great even without texture effects though.

It looks like FFXII. There's a cutscene in one of the trailers with characters that look essentially like judges from FFXII. The palette seems a bit darker on the whole, but to me they're pretty similar.

In terms of gameplay I already mentioned its similarity to FFXII due to MMORPG elements and the targeting lines. Also the other members of your party seem AI controlled. I do realize it's not turn based, but neither is Gears of War. Anyhow I'm not claiming it's a direct copy of either of those games, I'm just saying it's reminiscent of both.

Oh, and FFXII was pretty much the best JRPG this gen or last gen.

EDIT: Depending on the outfit the main character almost has a Squall vibe.

Looks like FFXII? You mean looks like FF not FFXII. Is that the only Final Fantasy game your mind can perceive? The character art for the FF games were all done by the same guy and and he does the Art for Mistwalker. You can't copy your own creations. The lack of knowledge of youths today is astounding. This is as saddening as when I see people infer that Dragon Quest copied Dragonball Z...

Those aren't targeting lines, those are gathering lines(a single special move) that appear when you use a move called the gathering which makes all enemies gather around the main character. After the which he release the energy built up from them back at everything attached to the line.

You target manually and there are no lines to guide you.

FFXII doesn't play like MMORPGs(plural). It plays like FFXI which is one MMORGP and where its battle system was taken from. Did you even know that much?

The other members of the part are AI controlled... you mean like every real time action game that had multiple people on your team at once that has been made since the days of the N64? Oh no, that was obviously something unique to FFXII that series creator of FF decided to copy.

Lets forget that the battle system he's using was made by him 15 years ago when he was working on FF7...

Please leave and don't post in this thread again. You don't know a thing about what you are talking about and your trying to be condescending against the game, more than likely, because its on the Wii and not a Sony system. Rest assured that no one is copying that crap FFXII in anyway as no one in their right mind would.

Go talk about that FFXII in some other thread, like one that was made for it. This is a thread for The Last Story on the Wii. Conversations pertaining to other games should be held elsewhere.

So to begin with, I'm definitely not being condescending here, you are. The accusation that I hate Nintendo and the Wii doesn't fly at all, and seems reactionary and excessive for no reason. I never implied any plagiarism in comparing The Last Story to the other titles I mentioned. In fact to me comparing it to FFXII and Gears of War is a compliment. Y'know not everyone hates FFXII.

Also don't act like the authority on Final Fantasy and Mist Walker when your statement that one man did the character art for the Final Fantasy games is wrong. Yoshitaka Amano hasn't been the character designer on a Final Fantasy game since FFVI. Nomura has been the character designer for most of the FF games since then. It's also obvious from the logo of The Last Story that Yoshitaka Amano had nothing to do with the art in this game.

Getting to The Last Story itself, this game is much more like FFXII than FFVII, which is what you bizarrely claim. FFVII is a straight ATB, row vs. row RPG. FFIV on steroids basically. The Last Story clearly uses FFXII style targeting lines. Enemies have pointers which indicate what member of your team they're targeting. The gathering attack puts aggro on your character, who tanks while the magic users wait for a countdown to finish before they cast spells. If your magic users are attacked before the countdown finishes, the spell is interrupted. Targeting lines are important in this regard, and it's something that FFXII, not FFXI, introduced to the FF series and I believe JRPGs in general. Personally I'm also hoping for an FFXII style gambit system to control the AI characters more explicitly than FFXIII's AI. To me the main difference between The Last Story and FFXII is that the player character manually attacks the enemy in real time and the addition of AoE spells.

Finally, I don't troll threads with graphics or gameplay comparisons. I didn't say game A has superior graphics or game B does the exact same thing except much better. I made a simple comparison, which is legit in any gaming thread, to illustrate gameplay mechanics. I used FFXII as an analogy for the style of gameplay in The Last Story. You may not agree, but don't get defensive about it.

As they say, it's a game reference, talking about the game compared to other games. Platform agnostic, open gaming discussion. If you don't accomodate contributor's discussions, you'll find your presence here is a lonely (or short) one.

woah woah ...calm down !
There's no reason for such hostility.

I am calm, and I am not being hostile. I just find comments of that nature to be irksome.

I assure you that I intended no conflict and the entire aim of my post was diminish any chance of it. His lack of any positive statements and his insistince of making the game out to be a copy of FFXII with no details backing the statements looked like he came in here for no reason other than to talk trash and/or provoke a reaction.

Most people I know who constantly compare Wii games to PS2 generally dislike the console and do so in order to be insult. If he does not then it was my mistake in assuming such a thing.

His saying they had similiarities itself I have no problem with. It was his lack of any detailed explaination for such comparisons and the way in which he stated that I found problematic. If I go in a thread for Killzone 2 and say "Looks like Halo" and then nothing else, how do you think people will respond to that?

If he is truly not trying to start a problem then it is fine. I will accept that I was in error in that instance.

Your attitude, it needs fixing. Now take a few deep breaths and start working on it.

This reads like you're bringing a lot of baggage from other forums. SedentaryJourney said:

If you say gameplay looks like Halo, and you love Halo, everyone's going to know what you're talking about regards gameplay, and no-one's going to take that as trolling! Or if you compare the cover mechanics of Gears to a game, or Uncharted's cover mechanics to a game, you're just describing the new game in terms of other known quantities. Nowt wrong with that, and it's a darned sight better than trying to describe every game from scratch without making reference to prior, common experience!
