To get back on topic, according to the Inc AMD is showing R600 at CES
Apparently it's not the final version of the board though.

strange. I still remember how in days of R3x0 reign, this SAME Steam survey was just fine. :p

Not true, I'm sure you could find a number of Nvidia fans who would argue that the survey was biased because of the ATi/Half Life 2 deal.

There's always someone to take issue with it. There's also just some odd things about it. The 8800 numbers for example seem crazy high. Its our best source though.

When the market share numbers from Mercury Research jive with the Steam survey then it is pretty obvious what is happening. Unless there is an IHV bias in those that play the games supported by Steam I don't see how it can't be considered a decent random sampling.

*EDIT If anything it might be slightly favoring ATI beacuse of the HL2 deal as Skrying mentioned. I doubt this amounts to much though...

A bias towards an over-representation of high-end cards I can believe. Those with the latest and greatest are maybe quite keen to hit the "hell yeah, wave my e-peen at teh Internets!" button, whereas those with a lower specced card don't really care that much and err on the side of protecting their privacy.

You can't really blame AMD/ATi for making you wait, they card will be out when its ready, in the mean time if you want to wait be patient  . Its not like they are purposefully forcing you to play on Intel integrated graphics in the meantime :devilish:

i'm aware of this but its still a problem if it becomes a regular occurrence. People do get tired of waiting and they do go out and simply buy and 8800GTX precisely because of the reasons i stated. The two things that keep me with ATi are driver familiarity and the fact that i've never had an issue when trying to run games from 8 or 7 years ago but most people that call themselves enthusiasts just want the highest 3Dmark scores. Intel, for example, knew that market penetration was extremely important with the pentium 4 even while the Athlon 64 was destroying it so they kept releasing new parts on a regular basis. Graphics cores are a bit more complex, granted, but it just feels like to me that ATi is flying by the seat of their pants when they push such a late release, intentional or not, because it does lose many sales, including OEM deals.

Nice nod to the "rest" of the press out there:

WELCOME TO THE FIRST Edition of INQUIRER's show information bulletin for journalists and bloggers who think they're important enough.

We figured that less influential sites would like to know that AMD has two R600 prototype boards on the show.

Boy, they're full of themselves, aren't they ?

The Inq reports that AMD will showcase 2 R600s at the CES behind closed doors. CES starts tomorrow if I'm correct until the 11th of January. Source: http://uk.theinquirer.net/?article=36757

I guess Theo flunked math. 16x32MB chips equals 512MB.

So the passionate NV guy hacks his .inf to turn his ATI card into an NV card for the survey?

Err, why does passionate NV dude have an ATI card in his system in the first place? :???:

I suspect the valve survey is pretty accurate within the limits of their own clientele, however you feel about the representative nature of that clientele vs the larger market. I mean, no market numbers are without weaknesses, that I've ever seen.
No, but I've seen hardcore IHV loyalists fudging the survey from a 7600 series into 7900 series. The survey is akin to stroking your e-penis and I presume a good % of people do it. Which is what makes me more suspect of them over Mercury or Jon-Peddie numbers.

And I brought up forging in response to this:

No, but then neither are most opinion polls (which are also opt-in, but which also give the respondent the opportunity to lie when providing an answer, which this survey does not).

strange. I still remember how in days of R3x0 reign, this SAME Steam survey was just fine. :p
Sorry but it was dominated by the 5200/4200 back then.

Sorry for the OT.

Well.. I checked it .. and it really was the 9600/9800 on topping the list.. but YOU knew that.. you stood next to me buying an ati card just for the hl2 voucher..

That makes no sense - the survey is anonymous. An ego boost only works if people know or care about your submission. Notwithstanding the inherent retardation of feeling good because you claimed you have better hardware than you do

They are already nuts enough to post their scores on that anonymous survey anyway ..
Who knows what more they are capable of.. !

;)

Anyway I don't see the problem in trusting TH's Interactive Hardware charts
You know they use a standardized testing procedure and it's not like they produce results that are gravely inconsistent with test done by other sites (And I'm definitely excluding surveys here)

ATi marketing isnt all that great. Now its AMDs chance to show off their marketing with ATi products, but they too arent that great at all compared to the likes of Intel/nVIDIA.

So much for this (ok i just had to post this.. i found this rather humourous with the current topic being discussed in the R600 rumour thread.)

I'm much more angst-filled by the 12" board part. There goes a sizable chunk of even the enthusiast market at that size. Sure, some will toss out a chassis to get the big dog on the block, but others will not. . . I had a bit of a wrasslin' match/case mod'ing with 10.6" 8800 GTX. . . But then 7900GX2 was quite a bit bigger than 7950GX2, so hopefully AMD will get that trimmed down before release.
