Temprature measurements for Xb360

Here are a couple of temprature measurements for XB360. Taken directly at the fan exhaust using a digital thermometer.

Ambient temprature: 75F
Xb360-dashboard only: 124F
Xb360-PGR3 played for 10 min: 129F

To give a comparison, I got a 92F for my desktop PC (HTPC form factor, Athlon2500(barton core)).

It is rather strange that the temprature readings are very close to each other for no-load and full-load cases. Is it possible that the CPU and GPU are not cloaked down when only dashboard is used?

Listening to the horrible racket the fans make, I think it's pretty much a certainty the CPU/GPU are running full tilt on the dashboard. Which is completely crazy by the way as the console is hardly doing anything, it can't even download software in the background while doing something, ANYTHING else. I really hope MS fixes this, if it can turn down the fans while decoding and playing back DVDs surely it can do the same in the dashboard.

Do you do anything but bitch, Guden?
Did I hurt your feelings?

It's not bitching. The thing IS a bit loud, I'm just stating a fact that's all. Considering the console CAN run quieter whilst at the same time do more actual work as in the case of playing DVDs, I for one sure hope MS implements more aggressive power saving into the dashboard. It's a waste of electricity if nothing else having the system draw 120-ish watts doing almost nothing.

And to paraphrase a classic movie:
"Who's the biggest bitcher, the bitcher or the bitcher who bitches at him?"

I really like my 360... its interface, online play, and overall experiance really does kick ass.

But I must say that its INSANELY loud fan sucks!!!

It is such a huge product flaw. It make the DVD uselss and just thinking about how much power it is consuming makes my liberal-take-the-buss-kyoto-loving ass cringe.

The fan problem of the 360 is almost as bad as the slow-as-hell load times of the PSP.

Now if you will excuse me, I am off to play kameo with the volume turned all the way up.

It's not "such bad engineering", they just need to quiet down the dashboard. During gameplay it isn't much of an issue IMO.

i checked mine out and it's a lot cooler...although i have to admit that my room is very, very, very cold...

This confuses me, because there have been times, that I'm downloading something and let's say I have downloaded 17%, then I Browse around a while even play some games then go back to the download page and it shows 53%?? what's going on?

i'm wearing a few stacks of clothing at the moment...

oh ok, so the download just stops if you swithch to some other function, but if you switch bact to downloading after playing for example a game, you can continue from where you left off?

the fans kick in based on tempreture. If you just siwtch the system on and it's in teh dasb board it's quiet. Same as using a DVD movie. Put a game in and the fans kick in until the tempreture has lowered. I think this person didn't measure the tempreture accurately.

...and guden sell that xbox 360 tosomone that will enjoy the thing. Save us another one of you tirades. It's almost like you bought the console just so you can bitch about it.

Actually the box is noticeably (I'm tempted to say "a lot") quieter when watching DVDs. Dashboard makes about as big a racket as playing games actually, except the DVDROM isn't going full pelt as well. The fans sure are though.

Sorry Quincy, I'll continue to speak my mind on issues that annoy me, no matter if it's your beloved microsoft xbox, or the silly PS3 batarang controller or the incomprehensible reason nintendo still hasn't released the DS in anything else but scratch-prone silverspray color, or perhaps something else entirely. What's the point in only mentioning the GOOD stuff, I'm certainly not going to skip talking about the annoyances regarding your precious just because sensitive people like you and a few others don't want to hear about it.

I certainly have no reason to overstate the negative, I just mention things as I see them. 360 is overall a good console, it's a loud bugger though in current incarnation and there's a few beauty spots here and there (dangling cables, discs hitting the casing on the way in and out in vertical, etc). Why shouldn't I be allowed to speak about these things? No need for you to take anything personal...

What ever happened to pre-emptive multitasking? What OS is running the 360. Surely something based on NT. Is this to ensure a responsive UI?

A DL Queue sould be one of the first upgrades to come for the dashboard, I hope.

As for the percentages, once you start a DL, then exit, when you come back it always reads 50%, from that point on it's accurate but it operates on a 50point scale instead of 100.

Guden - when I turn mine on and it's just the dashboard it seems extremely quiet,
