Surprise - Fatal Frame2 scarier and better than Silent Hill

Question for Deepak: How does FF2 compare to FF1? I didn't care too much for the first game but mostly for the way it looked like. It had that typical clean Tecmo look, and even the main character had that dolly plastic look like their DOA girls. It seems to me that overal art direction is very much improved in the sequel, but I'm judging that only from the screens and trailers.

Sorry Marc, I never played FF1, but as far as FF2 is concerned it looks brilliant for a horror game, camera angles work perfectly....you suddenly see *something* in the background, you always expect something.....I must say I am not a grfxs expert (bump map etcetc) but it looked scary to me atleast. In between games it suddenly turns WW2 b&w kinda, as if you are dreaming, so overall a must try. Then in between you get to see cutscenes which explains a lot about the story. I don;t know about music as I don;t play games with high sound. :) . The main character carries a torch like SH...and it would be interesting if you could compare SH2/3 and FF2...their style etc.

A question to others shall I get and try FF1??

FF2 was being turned into SuperPlay time attack - SS rank in 1h 34m

http://www.planetdreamcast.com/orochinagi/cyberfan/superplay

There are 10 videos showing the SS rank in 1h 34m play. And the gals are wearing some other costumes than the default one.

And I had finally decided to lay my hand on a Japanese copy of it. The atmosphere is creepy, and the forest is looking good.

I was crazy enough today to have bought the X-BOX version of FF at bargain price (buying on impulse again), the Japanese X-BOX cover looks pretty good (but not as good as the cover of its PS2 version).

The X-BOX version and the PS2 version have different contrast and lighting, the thing that got me surprised is that the X-BOX version of FF only support 480i output.

Don't check the file name, can you tell which one is X-BOX and which one is PS2 ?

Both taken right at the start of the game.

BTW, Zero ~ Crimson Butterfly's cover looks excellent, not as creepy as the US cover, ha ha !

The blurrier one will have to be Xbox... It's like that in general. Call me a fanboi but i much prefere the PS2 look. Not like u can actually see anything from those shots anyway...

PS: Of course if i'm wrong, then u just substitute "ps2" with "xbox"... Point is still there, i prefere the sharper looking one.

Yes, you are right. The interlaced output of X-BOX is like that (with Advanced AV Pack or HD AV Pack).

But you can see the lighting is not the same, the torch in the PS2 version is shining a larger area, ha ha ! And the contrast of the PS2 output is higher (hence more white).

And sonically, the PS2 output is better (with both console connected by optical digital connection) in stereo mode.

Are the output less blurred on the new versions of X-BOX ? Anyone compared ?

Was the title first developed on PS2 then ported over to Xbox? that would explain some things. On a second look, the PS2 shot looks much better overall and more "realistic" in terms of lighting than the Xbox shot. Very weird..

Should be PS2 first then ported to X-BOX. But I suppose that shouldn't be the limitation of not supporting 480p output.

And about the lower contrast, X-BOX games on interlaced outputs are like that. You don't get the best if you don't play in progressive mode.

And yes, the lighting difference is weird.

So, are you comparing FF1 PS2 to FF1 Xbox or FF2 PS2 to FF1 Xbox? I'm a bit confused, as I thought FF1 Xbox was always claimed as better looking, improved, etc over FF1 PS2. However these screens definitely don't show that, and actually it looks the opposite is the case.

As Maskrider staed the interlaced out on the xbox could do with an replacement. heck back home native RGB support still wasn't that hot.

(note haven't played FF1 on xbox myself, but I don't imangine the bur issue going away here)

still, strange how they did not support 480p on the xbox?

It is like that with Component ouput or S-Video output in 480i, I am using original MS HD/Advanced AV Packs.

May be because my X-BOX is the first batch Japanese X-BOX, I don't know if the newer ones are still like that.

That surprised me when I tried it, ha ! I expected it should have changed to 480p when I was running it through my transcoder. Heh, nothing displayed on my monitor and I knew that it was still 480i.

Hold a minute. The PS2 version of FF1 used quite a bit of motion blur in game. This was obviously intentional. The game wasn't supposed to be clear all the time if even most of the time.

Your capacity to shine your flash light through various walls is realistic?

Certainly if I had ghosts chasing after me, I'd be moving at a blur! ;)

Like it would have done you any good. Half the bitches teleport...

Unfortunately the speed at which the characters moves doesn't seem to correlate with the the blurring.

Errrmmm... I was commenting purely on those screenshots posted on this page. Never have i said anything about FF1, or FF2 as a game. Only the screens, ok Legion? The same applies for the light-through-walls thing, it obviously isn't that obvious from the screens. Or are you still talking about FF1? Cause this is a FF2 thread, you see...

No wonder you have this misconception

Both games do this... Rent both and check it out.

Legion, go back to discussing things you know nothing about in the General Forum. There's already enough people here who don't know what they're talking about. Me included.

(I like Legion really, doesn't look like it but i do!) :D

I haven't seen light through walls yet. May be I am too early in the game.

And for the motion blur, the effect is not very noticeable unless you use action replay code to activate the high speed mode. Both X-BOX and PS2 version FF1 in this regard.

Didn't notice any motion blur in FF2.

When you find the flashlight(if you haven't yet), one of the first thing you'll notice it that it shines through walls - just try it.
The other thing - directly connected to the above, is that the light from the torch doesn't cast any shadows whatsoever.

Anyway I like the direction style of FF2 (it's classic japanese horror style), but graphically it's a simplistic game, especially compared to any other offering in the genre.

NO shadows at all? :D

I guess SH is still king then. Weird since even SH2 (more than 2 years old no) already cast shadows when using the flashlight... And not only SH2...
