Super-Geek Wireless Network Expert Needed...

I humbly submit to you my technology question of the month (possibly year):

Two locations exist at a certain corporation, the sales office and the manufacturing facility. They're about 1/2 mile away from each other. Currently, each building has its own fixed wireless internet access, which we pay a substantial sum for. VPN is quirky and I'm not sure I want to mess with it, but we now need to reliably connect the networks at both locations (again, 1/2 mile apart, appx, and a nice, unobstructed line-of-sight). So the goals are to connect the two networks, and to share just one internet connection.

The obvious question: What's the easiest way to do this, keeping cost and reliability both within reason? My initial inclination is to buy a couple of Linksys WRT54G routers, hack the firmware with the popular 3rd party one of choice to make them act as slave/client modules (also allows you to boost the output power), and hook them both up to a couple of high gain outdoor 2.4 GHz antennas pointed at each other.

While that sounds simple, it isn't exatly, and I'm kind of jumping in with both feet without knowing for sure whether this is the way to go or not...

Any help or even a vague idea of where to get more information on the subject would be appreciated... Thanks in advance, guys.

Yeah... but the antenna part is easy. It's what type of hardware to use between the network and antennas that I'm not sure about.

Antenna-wise, I've had good luck with these as it pertains to friends/family installations of wireless ISP hardware. My house is nearly 10 miles from the ISP's tower and this thing give me a lot of signal:

They're relatively cheap, more sturdy than a pringle's can, and have better gain. What I need is the easiest way to get from my now-existing network to the two antennas that will be facing each other...

Oh, yeah... the info I have on the Linksys WRT54G's and updating their firmware is as follows:

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=8

This is a list of what the firmware allows the WRT54G (which can now be purchased for less than $70 USD) to do.

What I can't find are concrete examples of how others have done things such as what I've described, so I have a "guide" to follow on the specifics, like how to set the routers up, etc...

you need a yagi antenna at both sides

a couple of Cisco Aeronet wifi accespoints =>> LAN router

accespoints need to be installed as close as possible to the antenna location .

as for configuring, you would configure this as you where connecting to LAn's to eachother

edit: isn't it easier to find cheaper internetacces trough isp instead of going wireless to from 2 offices?

Do you own the land in between? A (suspended) fibre-optic cable might be cheaper. <shrug>
