Strange USB problem

A friend of mine told me today of a strange problem he's having regarding USB devices.

Any new USB device he tries to use, Windows (XP SP2) won't recognize it. However, all of the USB devices he's used successfully in the past still work just fine.

For example... he's got a flash drive that he's had for about a year. It's always worked, no problems, and still works fine. But as of a few weeks ago, anything "new" (as in, something that hadn't previously been plugged in to his computer) isn't recognized and is unusable.

USB storage, USB hubs, digital cameras with a USB interface... none of them work, except for the things he's already had for a while.

All items in question are USB 2.0, and he's tried assigning a new drive letter for new devices, but still a no-go.

Any ideas?

try enabling / disabling legacy usb support in the bios

a mate had the same problem with a printer that solved it
