Sony Financial Results, FY to 31-Mar-09

Mostly serious. Obviously there's a big gap in pricing between the iPhone and DS, but stuff like Nintendogs and Brain Age are the very type of game that would work really well on the iPhone. Really I just think there's a greater overlap between the experiences provided by the DS and iPhone than there is between the PSP and iPhone. That's not to say the iPhone presents some existential threat to the DS. Both are actually just really good at expanding the market for games to new demographics.

I think there are overlaps between both the DSI/iPhone and the PSP/iPhone. DSi more on the gaming side and PSP on the media functionality side. However iPhone doesn't actually threaten either of them just like a website with a few free PC games doesn't threaten 360/PS3 or Wii.

Sony gave up the ghost on marketshare and price pressures from rivals along time ago when they saw the global storm clouds approaching, Yen strengh etc. Wasnt it 1st quarter they publically admitted getting profititable not market share is now the defining factor at SCEI. Making enough compelling content on the PS3 to carve out there own market and get profitable while atleast maintaining acceptable hardware sales. Which i think they've done upto now. That's in response to people thinking there's a console war on in this thread.

Thousands available? Right but how many were sold and for how much per game on average?

Yes, there are thousands of game for the iphone.

How many where sold? I dont have an exact figure, but i recall reading that your average iphone owner bought 12 times more apps than any other mobile phone user group.

Iphone is like the Wii, a licence to press money. They have had amazing sales, and they make a fortune from software on app store.

12 times more then any other mobile phone competitor can still be pretty insignificant in comparison to the likes of DS and and even PSP.

Also what's the average price per app and how is that split between the publisher and Apple?

I recently read a report the app store is break even for Apple.

That report is ridiculous.

Its obvious that the estimates are drawed up from thin air, based on nothing.

Look at the estimates, they expect that the App store has sold between 25-50 million paid apps. What kind of bullshit estimate is that?

Its obvious that they are drawing numbers from thin air, as any statistics model would pin point a far more accurate estimate (lower spread), if not, they would conclude that something in their model is missing and not publish your findings at all. Obviously, if you cannot decide if there has been sold 25 million or twice the amount, 50 million, then there is something seriously missing.

Thats equivalent of saying that you dont have clue. They have similarly huuuuuge spreads for all the others numbers. They have no accuracy whatsoever.

That being said, the app store might very well be breaking even (i havent looked at the numbers), however this report is worthless. :)

Apple obscures the actual numbers, though, by grouping free downloads with paid ones, which makes the numbers very very impressive but also fairly meaningless. People on the internet do latch onto them as an obvious show of success, too.

They no doubt do this because it is break even at best. The study proves it.

they did release numbers after the first month in operation

http://www.intomobile.com/2008/08/1...pplications-bring-in-1-million-every-day.html

$30 million revenue from >60million apps downloaded
maintaining the same rate
~$500 million from >billion apps downloaded

ok this is revenue, not profit + apple gets 30%, developer 70% i think

since the average price of the apps is very low (unlike ds/psp + console stuff), a couple of bucks.
25-50 million paid apps, wouldnt even be a ballpark figure

BTW I wonder what sales would be on consoles if games had a more flexible pricing structure?

Have you got something better? Geez lighten up dude. When confronted between forum poster or somewhat sourced/relevant report, I'll take the latter.

You neglect to mention that it really doesnt matter whether they sell 25 or 50 m, either way the numbers wont work out to great profit.

Frankly, Itunes is similar. People want to point out software as a gold mine, but software is a pittance for Apple compared to hardware.

This model is probably becoming increasingly relevant in gaming as well. Something like the PSP sells terribly little software, but it sells decently as hardware. If you're going to make make money off the whole project, profitable hardware will be key. This also applies to DS and Wii. Wii hardware sells like gangbusters, and of course it's quite profitable.
