some PlayStation 3 performance guess/estimates(wild guesses)

Well lets see. I believe it will fall inbetween the the sega master system and the first toy story in terms of graphics .

What insiders believed it would do less than 1 million poly's a sec? Even people at the DC Technical Pages knew it was going to be able to do far more polys a sec than that. Of course they did have some leaked info thanks to one poster, but that's a different story. If the DC could do more than a million pps, PS2 coming out later would be able to beat that by quite a bit.

as a matter of fact i remember most people (devs) were claiming 20million polygons persecond ...

I dunno have we seen that yet ?

I remember that too... I actually think I read a 20 mpps figure from PSM, although to my recollection they may have thought that to be an initial (first gen title) figure

At this time, I don't think anything on the market has hit that 20 mpps figure, but some have probably gotten pretty close at times (Ratchet and Clank perhaps).

I'm wondering if they hit the 10million polygon mark ?

reading the post that actually started the thread could help jvd ;)

i did but that was so many posts ago haha i try and read every post now cause well i'm suposed to watch u guys ... plus i think i'm breaking up with my gf that has my mind working even worse than it was

I am sorry to hear that :( ( hope you guys can reconciliate and the break-up is not definitive )...

I dunno i think its just graduation stuff we are dealing with . We are both graduating and going to diff graduate schools (if my dumbass gets in ) so i dunno .

What I'm most curious about is how one will program PS3. People had a hard enough time figuring out PS2, PS3's Cell architecture with a core+multiple VU's (8 VUs?) sounds like a bitch. I'm no game programmer, though. Anyone have any informed speculation on this?

i think there will be a decently powerful middleware solution available to anyone wanting to develop a game for it, altough some of the biggest developers with bigger budgets and more time in their hands will no doubt develop their own engines...

ONE THING IS FOR SURE, next generation is going to be eye candy around every corner, whether it is PS3 or Xbox2 or whatever..... if u think about what is possible even on old 2000 hardware (SH3), next gen is gonna be SOOOOOOOO good...

All the knowledge prior to the release of the ps2 made insiders believe it'd do less than a dozen Mpolys... In the end it appears it was far more than that, like 10x more...

Well, there's a first time for everything I guess. Are you actually insinuating that the PS2 went well beyond pre-release expectations? IMO, it didn't remotely come close.

HOW can you say that...

what exactly did it not come close?
The RAW 66 (or 75) million polygons estimate? because that is still true.
The IN-GAME estimate of around 15 million polygons with full effects? because that has bee reached...

or maybe you have a different idea of what was divulged BY SONY (not fanb0ys) prior to release...

I mean prior to announcement... the ps2 numbers expected were about 5M polys... the announcement gave us 75M for the GS, and 66 for EE(Vu1), according to the info from members in this board EE can top (100M+) verts... That is important because that is likely the number that will decrease with more complex vertex animation not the 75M... my guess, but I don't know about that stuff...
