SOCOM Hits Million Mark!

good to see it did so well. It is pretty underrated, the single player isnt anything special but the online aspects make it one of the best online console game out there...

A sign? Where have you been for the last 18 months?

SOCOM

Sony 1st party has been respectible for a while now.

Heh, I've been busy playing games. Don't think for a minute that I was making a blow to Sony, that may have what it sounded like, and for that I owe an apology to Sony. I've thought Sony's 1st party titles have been getting better for a while now.

Maybe the comment I should have made is: A sign that Sony's first party has been getting better and better.

But the point I will make is that their first party is now becoming a solid player for its own console. It's becoming more adept at different gaming genres and has now formed into a first party that can make decent games in almost all genres of games. It may be no Nintendo, but give it some time and I think it will continue to excel in quality.

Too bad ICO sold so badly, an ICO 2 would hit the spot right about now. ICO is the game that made me stand up and notice how good Sony's games have been getting. They've gotten way better since those accursed 989 Studios days. Yeah I know they've had PolyDigi with GT series for a long time now, but I hate sims with Sega's SuperGT (Scud Race) being the best racer in existence IMHO.

Yeah, Sony is definitely improving. I'd say that Nintendo (and Sega if they were still in hardware) had better watch out.

MS needs to shape up in this area now that Sony is experienced, or they'll have to rely on 3rd-parties..

Gran Turismo has always been a great sims series, and I eagerly await GT4 with each passing day. About a month ago I actually decided to buy SEGA GT2k2 and there just isn't as muhc to do in that game as there is in GT3. The AI is a little better, it has more of an arcade feel to it, but it just pales in comparison in regards to playability. Polyphony Digital has been an ace in Sony's arsenal for the longest time right now. As much as I lvoe arcade racers I love sims just as much, and the GT series offers that to me in one big effective package that can be played over and over again.

it doesnt hold up against even cheap PC games, but looking at the console online market, its one of the best games, I still think Sony has the better online games for now.

I'll assume the 'It' in question is SOCOM inwhich case I must strongly disagree. On the PC, the game that was closest to it's genre was the SpecOps series by Zombie which was horribly executed - SOCOM is the obvious better. Then, you get then endless Delta Force series, which is alot more action orientated and a terrible comparason, but in terms of quality, SOCOM wins threw it's polish. Then theres the Bargin Bin PC mil sim games which SOCOM stomps all over. Games like Rainbow6 series are indoor CQB orientated and there is no comparason as their too diffrent.

well vince, you havent played many games, heard of Ghost Recon? currently I am playing Deadly Dozen 2, which though its a about 40 years earlier, its still a similar game, and much much better, offering better graphics, rock solid netcode even for 56k, many gamemodes, Coop, DM, CTF, drivable vehicles(which you can load your entire team into).
and before that.. all for the peachy price of $19

Well, you will be happy to know that the next game from the team that made Ico is well underway :) Is it going to be an Ico sequel or not, is anyone's guess. I hope they don't make ICO 2 per se, as that would kinda negate their whole art approach to game making.

Besides, ICO sold approx 500K copies worldwide, so it's not bad at all, alhough much of those sales must have came after the price dropped to $20.

I prefer enjoyment over all else. I don't know what you look for in a game.

If you really did care about the most accurate controls above all else, what are you doing in the console forum?

Console games are supposed to be about fun.

Lots of people play PC games for the intense competition aspect of it, they can frag with headshots and then brag to their friends "i own3d j00!!". If that's your thing, fine, but it's not mine.

That's why I enjoy GR on XBL rather than the PC. :)

Ghost Recon on the Xbox is much more enjoyable than on the PC. ;)

Only to people who suck at those types of games, I prefer a pinpoint headshot to be total skill, instead of aim assist

Im sure you cried your guts out back in the day when those rare and evil LPB college boys would hand you your ass on a platter too ;)

edit: nm! chances are you got into online PC gaming when CS/Half Life came out :p

No doubt, Gran Turismo series is the best sim racer on a console. I'm not a fan of the Sega GT series because they always seem a little lacking, nevermind the fact they are good games in their own rights. About the only sim racer I've ever liked is Papyrus' NASCAR Racing series for the PC and they've just dropped PC support to develop for consoles. My taste is pure speed with powersliding around every corner in the vein of the Ridge Racer series and Sega Rally Championship. But the best arcade racer to date is Sega's Super GT (not to be confused with the tamer sim based Sega GT). Super GT (a.k.a. Scud Race in Japan) is the pinnacle of arcade racing and has never seen a port from its Model 3 platform. I can't find much on the web about it except for grainy pics. It came out in 1996 no less, and although its graphics luster has faded, the gameplay is pure arcade perfection. To me Super GT (NOT Sega GT) is the king of all things arcade racing.

Uhm, Ive been online gaming for almost 10 years now...
I'm still stuck on 56k because broadband doesnt exist here, but its the LPBs who do all the whining, get accused of cheating at least 5 times a day, they cant handle the fact that a 56k'er is kicking thier 30 pinged butt..
Ping cant replace skill, nor can aim assist.. what I really want to see is XBL games being compatible with PC versions, so you can see just how bad controllers really are on FPS, people on PC attempt that, people have hooked thier XBox controllers to thier PC for BF1942, they are easy to spot, they are the dead ones.

a4164, I wasn't replying to your post mentioning SuperGT. I'm of the same opinion regarding that game amongst other SEGA arcade racing games. There was a tech demo done for the Dreamcast very early on that SEGA showed to developers that was made to demonstrate the DC's power. It wasn't arcade perfect by any means, and it was just one car, but it was still above the N64 and PSX. SuperGT is by no doubt one of the best arcade racers to ever grace the arcade, especially with its arcade take on real licensed cars. It's a shame a sequel or a console version was never made, because it could have been something to write home about.

Yeah, that's a FANTASTIC idea.

Then we could have a bunch of cheating bastards on there with non-standard controls and wallhacks and everything.

Here's a newsflash, Howdy: Not everybody plays just because they think they have to prove something in a game because they can't in the real life.

Some of us actually play games for the fun of it, and want to keep it that way. And that's why games like GR on XBL are a breath of fresh air. If I wanted to play uber-competitive anal-retentive teenagers in PC FPSes, I'd do that with my PC.

I prefer a different gaming experience on a console, and I get a more enjoyable one in my not-so-humble opinion. And the fact that we can't use a keyboard and mouse (or rather, don't have to) is part of what makes it better. It's, by its very nature, a more relaxing environment to lay back on the couch with a controller rather than hunched over a computer keyboard.
