So what was nintendo's "megaton announcement"?

Magnum PI:

> what exactly was printed in V-Jump ?

I don't have the translation but the gist of it was that there would be an announcement in December that would cause a worldwide boom in Cube sales. It didn't hint at mergers. Nintendo wasn't mentioned in relation to the announcement. It just said that something huge would be announced.

Well, great, then. We now have fewer than seven business days left in December. I'd say any announcement short of Gamecube curing cancer would not be enough to cause a "worldwide boom in Cube sales."

It's either too little, too late, or complete and utter hogwash.

As I said before, I vote the latter.

Wishful thinking? It was printed in V-Jump.

Think before you speak.

You think "wishful thinking" has never made it to print before? Unfounded rumors sure as heck have made it onto webzines.

I don't know about you, but I don't believe everything I read - especially "news" as nebulous as that.

Kolgar:

V-Jump is a big magazine made by an even bigger publisher. There is little doubt that it knows something but announcements are pushed back or cancelled all the time. It's just the way it is. Like I said, it could also have happened already... chances are we'll never know.

Or, how about V-jump didn't know what the heck they were talking about? I think that seems to be the real answer right now.

Or, maybe some of you just didn't know what the heck V-jump said and made your own intepretation of the situation.

Qroach:

When can we expect M$ to announce its acquistion of Sega? I want to put it in my calender so I don't miss it.

Thanks.

The fact you'd ask that again is just another trollish comment. I told you before, it was nothing more than another rumor. You didn't see anyone going around starting threads saying "look out, here comes amzatron", did you? See below, I can make stupid comments like yours as well.

Cybermec,

tell me again how Nintendo won't sell rare... and since you kno better than Carmack or Id Software regarding doom 3 appearing on all consoles, perhaps you could tell us the release date too?

Thanks

I think Cybamerc is right Qroach, it's about Nintendo, but not necesarily by Nintendo. I think I've figured it out:

MS announced on Friday that Nintendo is behind Xbox everywhere but in Japan. That's pretty Megaton if you ask me. I don't see how it's going to move Cube hardware, but I'm working on it... 8)

Qroach:

> tell me again how Nintendo won't sell rare...

This is just you making stuff up as usual.

While I don't necessarilly think that giving up Rare is a wise move Nintendo isn't losing Rare as much as it is giving them away. This is only going to happen if Nintendo wants it that way.

> From that perspective, MS is buying a name

Indeed. The vast majority of the Rare developed franchises are owned by Nintendo. Sure M$ is getting Conker and Perfect Dark but they are hardly worth £250 million.

You'll find plenty more posts like that on other boards.

No the real humor was seeing all the Xbots suddenly change their opinion about Rare. It was pure gold.

Another funny thing is that while you won't find a post from me saying that Nintendo won't sell Rare there is this one post from you:

I don't believe that rumor, but there's nothing that would stop MS from purchasing a company like that. Nintendo owns shares in Rare, but they don't own the contorlling interest in the company. If anyone was to step in and purchase contorlling interest, they they could influence the company to do whatever they want.

Don't forget, Ms tried to by Sega. So they had the money to do that, and Sega is much larger than Rare. Not that this will happen... if it did? Oh boy...

I'll await your apology with great anticipation. Are you man enough to admit that you're a filthy liar?

MS announced on Friday that Nintendo is behind Xbox everywhere but in Japan.

Surely you mean GameCube rather then Nintendo, if you say Nintendo you include GBA.. and you really don't want to do that :)

Anyway to the point. I bet MS actually worked that out by taking numbers from everywhere but Japan and adding them up. Which of course would be like Nintendo taking numbers from everywhere, including Japan, and declaring that "XBox is behind GameCube everywhere" ;)

Hmm, seems I got you and capatain howdy mixed up. It was actually him that denied the rare being sold rumor. That's my mistake, but that doesn't change the fact you were going around BS'ing people about ID and Doom 3 appearing on game cube or Todd Hollenstead saying it was actually coming..

No the real humor was seeing all the Xbots suddenly change their opinion about Rare. It was pure gold.

More like it was funny to see the cubies change they're opinion on rare. I've personally said the same thing for years. The only reason to buy a Nintendo platform was Nintendo and Rare games. That's something that hasn't changed.

Another funny thing is that while you won't find a post from me saying that Nintendo won't sell Rare there is this one post from you:

So, that was my first post on the subject if I recall, and i openly admitted that I originally thought the RARE rumor was BS until I got personal confirmation it wasn't, and something was indeed happening at rare. That came from the former head of psygnosis.

The point I was making was that someone even in light of every place on the planet confirming it was happening, there were still people denying it at later on. So, what's your point?

Are you man enough to admit that you're a filthy liar?

ha, a filthy liar? What exactly have I been lying about? I thought you said somehting you didn't. That's not a lie, it's a mistake... Please go ahead and explain to me what I'm lying about. if you want to talk about liars, how about a certain somoen that said todd hollenstead said doom3 was coming to the cube. Anyone that says that is a "filthy liar".

Cybermerc your comment about the Xbots and rare is purely comical.

I swear to god i remember people in here touting Perfect Dark and other Rare titles as amazing GC exclusives  . Now that MS owns rare i am hearing things like; "but it will appear to late in the xbox's life to do any good" or "yeah right, when is it coming out".. You know the same stuff GC fanboys complain about other fanboys saying to them about their nintendo titles . If the "xbots" are hypocrits for hyping the title and chaning their minds, then "cubies" are even more so for changing their minds, changing their stance on belated "AAA titles", and for complaing about others changing their minds.

Legion:

> I swear to god i remember people in here touting Perfect Dark and

I think a lot of ppl were hoping that Rare's Cube titles would solidify the Cube line-up by offering the kind of software that would compliment Nintendo's offerings as was the case back in the N64 days. Sadly, it never happened. Rare took its sweet time getting its first game out and while the game did well it didn't quite live up to previous Rare titles.

Obviously, a lot of Nintendo fans felt betrayed when Rare left (technically Nintendo sold them but I believe Iwata when he says Nintendo felt Rare had lost its enthusiasm for making games) and it has undoubtedly colored their opinions but at the same time you have keep in mind that when the Rare acquistion was made public at X02 Kameo had undergone some changes and Joanna Dark had been completely redesigned. It's simply not what Nintendo fans were expecting or hoping for and as such criticism is justified.

Kameo, which IMO looked horrible at E3 2001, had been completely ruined for its X02 showing. Horrendous art, stupid, bland characters and shitty gfx... while it had just recently been moved to Xbox I doubt it looked much different on Cube. It'll be interesting to see if Rare can polish the technical side of things before release... or have M$ dev support do it for them. Rare is slow, that much is a fact.

I think the Joanna Dark character art speaks for itself. You may like it but Nintendo fans were hoping for a "mature" title that could possibly help break down the kiddie image that the Cube has been stigmatized with. Maybe the game will be great, who knows, but I think the character art certainly caused a few ppl to reevaluate their previous stance on the franchise.

> Now that MS owns rare i am hearing things like; "but it will appear to
> late in the xbox's life to do any good" or "yeah right, when is it coming
> out".

Ppl said the exact same things when Rare was with Nintendo. Rare like Nintendo is infamous for delaying its software. With Rare there was a time when those delays paid off with better quality software but even hardcore Rare fans seem to be a bit disappointed with Rare in the last few years.

Ever since the GBA and Cube came out Rare has been even less productive. No GBA software has been released and just one Cube game after a considerable delay. How many of you can honestly say that you believe M$ when it says that Rare will release 5 games for the Xbox over the next two years?

> then "cubies" are even more so for changing their minds, changing their
> stance on belated "AAA titles"

Not at all. The software clearly has undergone changes and Nintendo certainly wouldn't sell Rare if it believed the games was of a quality that would move hardware.

> and for complaing about others changing their minds.

Nonsense. Nintendo fans constantly have to endure the stupidity coming from ppl claiming that Nintendo's games are kiddy but when Rare unveils an arguable kiddie-fied game and undoubtedly kiddie-fied character art plus a trailer containing characters from previous kiddie-oriented games it is TEH AWESOEM!!1 It's it the very definition of hypocrisy.

That said, I don't really detect much excitement about Rare anymore. Perhaps just because we haven't really heard from them since X02 but I get the feeling it has more to do with a general indifference. Certainly Kameo looks pretty underwhelming compared to some of the other titles coming out for Xbox next year.

Quite frankly I don't expect Rare's style to be a big hit on Xbox. And before anyone start saying that Rare will change it ways under M$' ownership you are sadly mistaken. Tim Stamper confirmed several times that Rare was never forced by Nintendo to make games of a certain style and that it would continue to make the same type of games.

An interesting disposition to be sure. Will it pay off?

I don't know if this has been posted before but I found out about it today.

Ooh Megaton!

And in closing, we’d just like to point out that despite the connections that will be drawn, GBA SP is not the fabled, rumoured, hyped and generally fantastical ‘megaton announcement’. As V-Jump, the magazine which started the fuss (before over-zealous Western news websites leapt on it, blew it out of proportion and then attempted to trademark it), has finally unveiled, the so-called megaton announcement is little more than a Cube version of a comic popular with V-Jump’s readers. So there you go.

It's an anime game called Naruto.

So there you go. Blame V-Jump for exaggerating in the first place and the western press and internet community for blowing it all out of proportions. Man this was the best rumor in years! :D
