I completed SH2 (PC) yesterday within 10 hrs....excellent game...excellent graphics (esp indoors)....also Maria is Character model is better than James...

BTW, I still dont know anything about the story...what happened...

I know James killed his wife Mary as he didnt like her....

but...

who were the other characters in SH2...?
What were they do there???
How many endings are there? I believe there are 4 (btw I got fair ending)??

Can anyone explain me the story?

I also had trouble figuring out what the other characters (aside from Maria) were in the game for. Other than that I really, really, really loved this game. Well, maybe not the actual gameplay, but the story/atmosphere/presentation was incredible.

Waiting for SH3 with baited breath...

Chap! walkthroughs dont explain the story!! I just want to know the basic story...what is eddie/Maria/that child girl/that other girl doing in SH...?

I think Chap meant this:

http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/silent_hill_2_plot.txt

I'd go into it.. but, well, I majored in English at University, and its 5am, and if I did you'd have a 4000 word essay by noon.

Needless to say, there's yet to be a game to match the narrative depth that SH2 achieved.. symbolism, characters, imagery, fuck you name it.

I am thinking of modding my PS2 simply to get my hands on SH3 early, thats how much I love this series.

edit: I don't know if the PC version came with Maria's scenario. If not, I suggest you check out the Xbox ver, her contemplated suicide was quite moving.

SH2's soundtracks are incredible....the ending...Laura's theme....Alone in the room!!!...all are great!...infact every SH game has featured excellent music scores...SH1's opening score!

The three different ending themes are reason enough for replay... Angels Thanatos is GREAT and metalish (Suicide ending), but Overdose Delusion has to be my favourite, by far (Leave ending). I can't remember the name of the third one (Dog & Ressurection ending), but its pretty good too, a little strange though. Can't remember which goes with the Maria ending...

And yes, the different endings are great enough to warrant replay :) (Suicide is breathtaking, definitely a videogame first, Leave is ho-hum/mainstream, Mary is disturbing, Resurrection is homage to SH1, and Dog is.. well...       ) Supposedly a joke/Alien ending in SH2:RD for Xbox as well..

oh, I should add that playing the game without a force feedback controller is a personal insult to the design team, you have NO IDEA how much the 'heartbeat'/'health indicator' adds to the tension and atmosphere of the game.. while playing it through with a sliver of life (to get the Suicide ending), I was absolutely terrified from the force feedback

PC version has maria scenario, as well as PS2 greatest hits.

Explanaiton of SH2 plot would be too long, just read the FAQ file.

Somehow I should be able to explain what going on, but I'd have to explain Sea Cucumber's :)

Lots of endings,
Suicide,
Redemption,
Maria,
Ressurection,
Dog,
UFO,

The final thing to do in the game (when you have seen all the ending) is to look at the words you can't read throughout the game (on the stones some words are scrubbed out, they are readible at the end), some of the history of Silent Hill is explained.

One thing I will say it that both the official guides and gamefaq are slightly wrong with regard what you have to do to get which ending :) Also the plot on the net doesn't completely fit what I know about SH2.

AFAIK The PC version is complete. PS2 Special edition, Xbox and PC should have all endings etc. AFAIK PC is the only one with save anywhere and the movie theatre thingy (and the ability to play at 1600x1200 :) ).

With regard the people/story, Silent Hill (the town) attracts disturbed people. The town also has a story (Old gods, Indian burial grounds, human experiments etc)

Eddie has pyschopathic tendencies,
Laura (the child) is disturbed (a surrogate child for Mary),
Mary is dying/dead and wishes she had children (so looks after Laura), Maria wants to be loved, doesn't want to be a stripper and wants what Mary has (when she gets James she finds that his love is corrupted)
Angela was abused by her father (If anybody hadn't noticed Pyramid Head is Angela father).
James killed Mary out of love,
SH1 Harry just does a cameo ,
Inu the real star (Inu = Japanese for Dog) causes it all as a way of getting back of Eddie for shooting him.
The guy in Born from a wish story is pretty obvious.

There is a whole pyschological interplay where the character represent various emotions etc. Laura is a child on one hand but evil on another (she hurts you but does she do it because she is really evil or just doesn't know better). Also the central Mary/Maria story line has a undertone of corrupted love (Is the illness related the James love?)

Its quite possible the most 'adult' game every made, not for the scary bits or the gore (or even the sex, the infamous Pyramid Rape scene) but for the head-on way it tackles child-abuse. The side story of Angela is directly on child-abuse, Angela's personal 'hell' is due to the abuse she suffers at the hands of her father.

Personally I can't stand Laura, but that may be due to the amount of times I saw the piano scene (hardest scene in the game from a engine point of view). A one point Oscar and I knew every word from that scene ("Haha, did I scare you", and thats after 6 months :( )

Angela was abused by her father (If anybody hadn't noticed Pyramid Head is Angela father).

Wait a second. I thought that her father was that monster that you fight in the room? It's the first of many, but I figured those represented her father. Hmmm, to find out that it's actually Pyramid head... cool :D

I do have a quick question. Not sure if this has been answered already, but what kind of poly counts did the PC version of Silent Hill 2 have for characters?

the game was a direct port save a few features so its exactly like the ps2 except for hi rez and save everywhere feature.

I could be wrong... Trust me it was just as confusing on the inside :) My conclusion is drawn by the fact that in the code Pyramid Head is sometimes called Papa (but the comments are in the code are in Japanese, so its easy to make mistakes :) ), I assumed that that meant they were one and the same. Its also explains the rape scene to me.

The same models are used for all 3 version (PS2, Xbox, PC), the shear amount of artwork made any redoing impossible. The art work came to me on 20 DVD-R full of source art....

IIRC correctly it varies from 2000 polygons upto 12,000/15,000 polygons. One oddity is that the in-game James has more polygons than the cutscene James! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Mary (best seen in the death bed scene) is incredible, its over 10,000 polygons uses morphs and skinning at the same time.

Its a port of the Xbox version actually, the main 'external' difference are the high-res, movie theater and save anywhere. There are a number of subtle changing to the game as well.

One is that there is no 'rowing' section, so the scoring had to be changed and I got to fix the worst bug in the console versions :). If you use health thingy but already have maximum health, the console versions will waste it, whereas the PC won't.

The PC version also has a small in-joke in the credits. It will be totally lost on Americans (which is how it got through) and its not very funny to those not on the team but we thanked Norwich's favorite son for his vital role in the development of SH2PC.

*races through the thread to avoid spoilers*

I got this used (for Xbox) back when I bought TWW and Pokemon Ruby.. and it got shuffled aside until I beat those two titles. Only earlier this week did I start my quest in th' quaint ol' town of Silent Hill. So far my impressions are mixed.

A. As Ozy stated, sooner or later you're going to be wowed by the atmosphere and other non-gameplay aspects.

B. The actual gameplay (and control) are rather rough. RE1 for GCN is a much better game gameplay-wise.

Albeit, I must say that I'm enjoying SH2. It's starting slow but I'm liking what I've seeing. Very mysterious.. I can't wait to see what happens next! I'm still early on, just got the Handgun.. so I've got a ways to go. /hopes that SH3 goes to Xbox or GCN

PC version also has per-pixel lighting on static geometry BUT has worse looking shadows than either PS2 or Xbox version. Also has some weird texture repeating seams that look kinda ugly :\

In other news Silent Hill 3 is officialy announced for PC! DeanoC was right all along (not that I doubted!) Team Silent again confirmed they don't have any plans for GC or Xbox ports, though.
