saturn's abilities

I'd have to say Sega's Saturn is my favorite console ever. Not only is it my favorite, but the 1st model (the one with oval power and reset buttons) is still the best looking system ever and probably always will be. Quite reliable as well.

Anyway, I had a question, probably only someone here could answer.

In the hands of the very best programmers making their very best efforts, the saturn could overtake (or at least equal) the ps1 in 3D image quality and performance, not just 2D, right?

Yu Suzuki once said something like only the top 1% percent of programmers could get the most out of the saturn.

That made me LMF'nAO more than anything in my entire 21 years alive.

If this world had any justice he'd be a world renouned journalist and billionaire.

Why in the hell would anyone want to ban someone that fuckin funny?

You can answer, but it won't make any sense to me.

Well, I'm glad you linked to that. I've had Future on my ignore list for so long, I never would have known that the Dreamcast was 'the first white symmetrical console'.

I'm still not sure if that explains its success or its demise, but it's a handy piece of information to have nonetheless.

There's a Shenmue Saturn demo video which I'm sure you've seen. That is supposedly the best the Saturn could do. Although we won't know for sure since it was never actually released. I would've liked to see how much pop-in it had.

But in the end all that matters is the games that were released and with that the best are Burning Rangers and Bulk Slash.

The saturn had the best games of any console ever. I used to get a damn good laugh out of nintendo's axiom "quality, not quantity."

Nights into dreams, Mr Bones, VF1, VC 1 and 2, Clockwork Knight 1 and 2, Astal, MK 2 looking mighty sharp (although I still preferred the snes version b/c the pit 2 fatality in mode 7 was better than it was originally in the arcade version,) a few Sonic Xtreme betas, Sonic Jam, PD 1 and 2, HotD, Daytona USA, Rayman, Shinobi Legions, WWS 97, and the 1st 32 bit WSB, a damn good looking version of primal rage, and my absolute favorite, Legend of Oasis. Playing through that jank was heavenly.
Plus some kick ass imports like Nocturne in the moonlight, as well as the only home (im)port of Taito's elevator action 2 to this very day.

Most have probably forgotten that the Tomb Raider's original platform of development was none other than the legendary sega saturn; likely due to sega's good relationship with core that started with ah-3 thunderstrike, i'd guess.

Err, I meant best looking. I also wouldn't laugh at Nintendo's quantity comment when you're talking about the Saturn. ;)
a few Sonic Xtreme betas,
You're listing the Sonic Xtreme beta that doesn't even qualify to be called a playable game and only leaked to the public last year? Really?

As a big Saturn fanboy I'm not sure about it having the best games ever but it surely had its great games. And I'll always have a fondness for it for being the last great hurrah for 2D games.

Lately, I've been thinking more and more that that title belongs to the GBA and DS.

The saturn had many more games than the ps1; I could name all of the n64 games released in 96.

The Saturn had great 3rd party support; the n64 didn't.

In fact, developers actually liked working for Sega better than Sony as well, especially early on due to stolar's anti-2d game policy and the fact that the people at sega were always the best to their 3rd parties. They even forgave accolade for circumventing the TMSS in all but the earliest genesis's.

Indicates an error. This time me.

There were 488 games for the Saturn, according to Wikipedia. A list I found on Gamefaqs lists 245 US releases. One list of PS1 US releases I found had 1239 titles on it. And for the record, according to nintendo.wikia.com, the N64 saw ~425 total releases, 297 released in North America.

With two threads by 2008 IQ blah-blah closed, including a clone of this thread, it shouldn't be surprising this thread has come to this end.
