In his G4 interview Satora Iwata said that Sony and microsoft are in a niche market.

Why does the video game console market only to 18-25 men....?

Women are ignored entirely

30+ are ignored....

Who cares what this guy says? He's a suit and suits always blab lots of bullshit, no matter who pays their salary; it's the same wether the suit works for Sony, MS, Nvidia, etc. Don't listen to him.

Well that niche market is the biggest piece of the market.
Until Nintendo show me they can sell more than Sony and MS put together, they should just shut up and get on with what they're good at. Till then, Sony will still be outselling them 8:1, "niche market" or not.

I know a lot of 30+ people gaming , they already grew up with video games in the 80s and continue playing.
It`s just the 50+ people that don`t do it, because they have no computer/game background from early on. But in the future there will also people gaming up to a high age because they grew up with it and it became part of culture.

The guy obviously has a point when you look at the market of, say mobile phones, ipods, etc.

His only problem is he has yet to prove Nintendo can grow the market with Revolution. It's going to be tough, but they have a shot with the new controller IMHO...

Satoru Iwata. Satoru.

And about what he said. Well, it's marketing 101.

The DS has genuinely expanded the market to females(and outselling PSP in the process.) So there maybe some credence to this arguement. I'm not sure if the controller is the way to do that, but we'll see.

He might be a suit now but he's also a respected game developer who's been in the industry for well over 20 years (he's been making games since developing Star Battle on the Commodore Vic-20). So I'd say he's earned the right to have his say.

Whats he talking about?

Nintendo has marketed to kiddies for years.

They have never been real interested in the adult market.

The 18+ demographic has been growing quite a bit over the years.

Well, I am 40 and I game quite a bit. Not quite as much as I used to but still do quite a bit.

I am signed up for the 360 and will be grabbing a PS3 next year.

I do not see an end in sight.

I was about 9 or 10 when I played Pong. My first experience with videogames.

Been there from the beginning.

It's Nintendo that is in a niche market, and it's Nintendo specifically who is ignoring the 30+ year old gamer.

I would like to say I'm surprised he would even make such an obviously backwards claim, but I'm not. It really is indicative of just how out of touch Nintendo has become with the console market.

i don't think nintendo ignores the 30+ gamer, i just think they market to the 30+ gamer incorrectly. i don't think many of the "kiddies" people speak of were the ones buying the GBA NES remakes (SMB, metroid, zelda, ect). those things sold on nostalgia alone for older gamers. but that was short lived.

the reason i'm sold on revolution is because of the "virtual console" idea. i own a closet full of older machines, some of them i only play 1 game on still, and it's exciting for me to think that i won't have to dig some of them out when i want to play a game here or there.

i was thinking the other day, with NEC on board with nintendo, is there any chance of the virtual console supporting TG16 titles? it would also be cool for it to support sega's 8 and 16bit machines, but i'm not holding my breath for that.

That is uber-niche. The NES remake market is like the Star Trek of video gaming.

True indeed. I was like since when does nintendo market to the 30+ crowd? We all play playstations and xboxes.... (london boy is 23 but he counts too!)

They are perhaps right though, most western style games do tend to not focus on girl gamers (I read a good article about emotional attachement in games). However the trend towards more japanese style games is likely to at least partially correct this because they tend to have a lot more girl orientated games (ok really really sexist here, and probably untrue, most girl gamers I know like to hack and kill stuff).

He did? Wow...

That was my first Vic 20 game... Seeing that was the thing that got me started coding instead of whatever random non-computing based hobby I was doing at the time.

So he's not been around the industry much longer than me - another few years and I ought to be a very senior boss of a major console manufacturer! Fantastic news!

So are you going to ignore the 15 years of dominance that Nintendo had in the handheld sector? Are you going to act as if they didn't basically have a monopoly in handhelds? And how in the heck is Sony supposed to take over what Nintendo has spent 15 years doing in the number 1 spot (and they were pretty much the only ones there) in a mere few months?

Can you give Sony a few years first. And how is a billion dollar industry a niche market. And if Sony and MS are in a niche market, yet sell more than what market is Nintendo in? Some of you guys will believe anything that Nintendo says. It's obviously marketing 101, so of course we shouldn't listen to this guy right now. I can imagine what this guy will say come next year.
