RUMOR: Microsoft Saves Silent Hills [Confirmed False from MS!]

guys, i think Phil's tweet is incomplete

"Sorry, this isn't true. Not sure where the rumor started but I don't want to mislead anyone. We are not buying Silent Hills but we're buying Silent Hill. And yeah, Del Toro, Kojima, and Norman will be on-stage at E3"

:p

Despite the ridiculous price, Minecraft is extremely popular and visible and has a major Internet presence, plus it's not platform exclusive. MS may never get their money back directly from that, but it has wider value. Silent Hills is a niche title and unlikely to shift boxes in a big way, so it'll never make back lots of money. If SH could make billions, Konami wouldn't be selling it. ;)

Ah, so you think the Mojang acquistion may have been a move to buy some popularity in gaming circles at the time when Microsoft's relationship with many gamers had a Facebook status of "It's complicated".

Anyway, it's been resolved now and surprise, surprise, it was bullshit. Or was it a Sony conspiracy to try and make Microsoft look bad? Enrage those people who hate bought exclusive franchises and lift the hopes of Silent Hills fans, only to dash them again? Fuck you, Microsoft for not saving Silent Hills? :runaway:

Obviously the Mojang acquisition was a) considered a good investment in a huge franchise, and b) considered a perfect match for HoloLens. Now which came first, I don't know, but I'm thinking HoloLens is what may well have sealed the deal, as the very first presentation of that already had a Minecraft like game and I think that was before the purchase was announced?

@Rikimaru That color scheme tho - obviously a Nintendo game. PT disappeared from PSN store because it's destined for WiiU, it's confirmed!

@Scott_Arm MS's long-term strategy is obviously cashing in by selling Minecraft real-estate on the open market. They could make an absolute fortune too, as since the landscape is customizable, every single lot could be beach-front property.

As a parent of two boys I fully understand the value of the brand; I've paid for the game on Xbox 360, PS4, Android, and iPad. Also have tons of merchandise around the house.

I don't see my kids getting into Silent Hill quite as much.

I don't know what the Mojang acquisition was about, but Minecraft is clearly worth a lot more in every way than Silent Hills!

Whatever MS does with Minecraft, hopefully they don't dilute the product with mindless DLC add-ons and tacky product placements (see: Angry Birds).

Whatever it is I would Love to see a true so called megaton happening in the E3 some day before I die.

Something like "Sony buys Nintendo", "Microsoft buys Sega"....

For billions of dollars I would expect MS to announce the acquisition of Kojima Pro with a 30 year commitment from Kojima to spit out an AAA game every other year or the whole of Konami's console IPs.

Because for whatever hype PT did create, you would need some creative math and nonsensical logic to project that IP to be worth billions in profits.

And then close them in the same basement where abducted rare
It's not like Sega are creating masterpieces left and right. As for Rare, this E3 marks their return to stardom, I think.

Is there for you a telling what would've happened if they stayed with Nintendo? Rare was a company that Nintendo envied. And Rare made some excellent games in the last 10 years, like Kameo, Viva Piñata, Banjo & Kazooie Nuts & Bolts. Perfect Dark wasn't a bad game, technically wise, but it had to be released on launch date, and that was a huge responsibility, so the final product had its issues.

Were Rare the same when MS purchased them, btw? Because that happened well into the 2000s.

Sony buys Microsoft using a toxic bank loan, then both go bankrupt. That would be a megaton.
After some time to reflect on that, and fierce inner conflict I'd ays... Oops no, please, if that happened I'd feel in a parallel world, wondering what happened, I'd get up in bed at night soaked in sweat.

Sure, some people would dribble like a kitten. I can imagine Kutaragi making a hostile takeover bid, but I guess that in the console world, both machines might merge one day, but both companies?? Monopoly laws would make that illegal and I wish Europe will sue them.

Why would a hypothetical MS/Sony merger be blocked by anti monopoly laws? Neither of them are in a monopoly in their respective main fields (MS software, Sony hardware) and they would not create anything resembling a monopoly after the merger.

Just putting some context in this purely theoretical tangent :)

Monopoly law is generally drafted to protect competition in a particular market so the regulation will be in this context rather than the wider businesses of the company's concerned. A good example of this is Microsoft's acquisition of Skype. Messaging (MSN primarily) was (and is?) a tiny, tiny part of Microsoft's business but Microsoft had made it known its intention to consolidate the two services which reduces the free competition in the messsaging market.

The high level test to trigger the EU's involvement is whether a merger or acquisitions would significantly reduce competition in the Single Market. I believe the situation is very similar in the US and China.

I think the significance of 'significantly' is significant and I don't believe their is a definition in the Regulation which means it's a case by case assessment. But three companies (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony) shrinking down to two (MicroSony, Nintendno) is significant to my mind!
