Reusing code

In the past I had made several game engines for a text based RPG and I have ported the code from C++ to Java and it is quite large.

In the Java port of my game there are source files which are more trouble to implement into the curent system (my new text based RPG using a Swing interface and loads of new stuff) than to re create that source file from scratch.

I never planned to reuse much of the code but in the end it would have made things easier if I had used bu I stuffed it up and now I regret it.

Have any of you ever come to that situation? What are the best ways to avoid situations like that in future?
