Report of REV being 2-3 more powerful than GC is false!

The USA Today report of Revolution being 2 to 3 times more powerful than the GC is false. Well atleast according to the updated IGNcube's Nintendo "Revolution" FAQ (page 2): http://cube.ign.com/articles/522/522559p2.html

So nobody knows how powerful the Revolution really is.
Let hope it is not even weaker than 2-3 times the power of the GC.

Maybe they misquoted. It happens.
Indeed, but to what the "two or three time more powerful" quote would be refering, in that case?

I think it was probably a Nintendo PR person talking about visual impact. RE:4 with per pixel lighting, better textures and running at a higher resolution certainly seems like something that could be run by a 3x more powerful gamecube, and I think such a game would look on par with the best of what was shown (at least in real-time) at e3. Now, whether it is technically 3x the power is unknown, but I highly doubt that Nintendo would shoot so low with its specs. I expect a machine on par with modern PC's, though the other next-gen systems are somewhat beyond modern PC's.

Also from the IGNcube's Nintendo "Revolution" FAQ:

Q: What is Revolution's media format?

A: Revolution will play proprietary 12cm discs, which is the same size as DVDs. It will also be able to play GameCube Optical Discs, as it is backward compatible with the unit. Details on the new 12cm discs are slim. Nintendo initially announced that the discs would be dual-layered, offering upward of 8 gigabytes of storage. However, shortly after the announcement, it removed all mention of dual-layered discs from its official Revolution press release.

Does that mean Nintendo is reconsidering the media format for the Revolution? Will they go for HD- DVD or Bluray?

I don't like the fact that, as far as we know right now, the revolution will only play DVDs with an attachment. That's just stupid imo.

na they did it with the xbox . This way nintendo can make more money off the unit if u wnat another dvd player .

Anyway nintendo has the advantage of going last so they can make a system around the power of the x360 / ps3 and make it for cheaper

Personally, I think Nintendo should go with mini-disks.

I do not see them competing as home movie devices.

What I do see though is that if the engineer Rev wisely they may be able to shrink it down and make it into a PORTABLE device. This would give their development platforms 10+ life cycle.

Look at the PSP. ~5 years into the PS2 it was released, and it should be around for another 5 years. This means they can port PS2 games over pretty easily (at least content it would seem so far).

If Nintendo can begin a trend, where their consoles become their hand held platform down the road I think that would be awesome. It would leverage their handhelds in a new way (huge existing library) and consumers would be pretty hip to the idea I would think. I could get a Rev, enjoy the Rev games, and 5 years down the road enjoy most of them on the go.

And developers would benefit. After 5 years they know the system inside and out and have a TON of tools and assets. Instead of tossing them they could be migrated to their hand held division. This way we would see some great GREAT looking games, and it would mean developers would leverage their current investment (handhelds make some money as Nintendo has shown).

Oh well, pipe dream.

I think nintendo doesn't have to wait 5 years .

They can make a tri core gekko with increased clock speeds

They can make an ehanced flipper type gpu and then they can put in a single gekko and a reduced pipeline flipper into a portable with reduce ram and get a portable gamecube +

Well the problem with that is, with such a huge available library of games that well, look the same since its the same hardware...many people would buy the unit and not purchase additional titles. So they'd better be making a profit on the hardware from day one.

Definately true that coming in later will give them the benefit of technology. The question is, how much time is there going to be and what can be gained in it?

Frankly I doubt any of us here can even begin to guess accurately. But I guess it's fun nonetheless. What else would we argue about? :)

Xbox 360 is going to be released in time for the christmas '05 season. We think PS3 will be released sometime next spring, and Revolution sometime next fall.

Overall, if the schedules hold, it will be very close technologically. I actually don't think the systems will be all too different in terms of overall power.

Good point. Then tweak the hardware some so games would have to be recompiled, but similar enough it is a simple task and the same tools can be used. But that would make the media source irrelevant of course.

I do kind of wonder with how Flash based memory is dropping in price if Nintendo will ever both making a optical based unit? ROMs use less power, are smaller, and are more durable. While optical has a current advantage in size and cost, if the GB2 comes out in 2007 will larger capacity flash/roms be cheap enough for Nintendo to keep using them?

Maybe Revolution will let you download and write games to a media source to play on your GB2  There would be all kinds of copy protection issues, but if they could overcome that they could make more profits and reduce media costs.

Exactly the idea I had for the gameboy evolved if it did have gamecube innards, and definitely something Nintendo would do...make it a system nearly identical to the console for ease of development, but with the opportunity to rehash titles for big bucks. Would be a brilliant scheme.
