Radeon 9800 256meg reviews ......

The price increase seems predicated on parity with the NV35. I tend to expect that for many benchmarks, but this product primarily just establishes a new low in performance/price ratio for ATI, despite the isolated performance increases.

After reading about the incredible overclockability of the current R9800 Pro's, I"m disappointed that the 256MB version doesn't have the increased core clock like the rumours have been suggesting :(

Still... should be a decent overclocker. If they had bumped the clockspeeds it would tread on the toes of the product they plan to release in ~2 month (R350 respin?) as a stop-gap before Loci.

Been a lot of winking from you recently, Evildeus. I hope you are prepared to defend nVidia like never before. ;)

Not really, but i think (well from what i saw ;)) that the 5900U will be the best product available in june. That doesn't mean that Ati doesn't make good products :)

Depends on your moral standing I guess.

So NV35 best buy i would say ;)
For integer pixel shader processing and high bandwidth situations, and for those clock speeds on the 9800, I'd say yes for the 256MB versions of the cards. I don't know what the 128MB version of NV35 looks like, and nVidia seems to have adopted the bait & switch as a permanent tactic moving forward. If the board design and chip characterisitics are solid, however, the clock speeds could be the same, so the comparison (as far as fps results) would come down to actual sale prices.

I'm thinking the ATI product Wavey mentioned is specifically targetted at Doom 3 launch, because I think Doom 3 (and most current games before image quality features are turned on) fits into the above restrictions. However, with the NV30's problems, I tend to think nVidia will actually have this product available within a decent timeframe after these reviews, so the amount of info released about that ATI product (i.e., none about its memory speeds, even though core clockability is well established) doesn't allow it to be an answer right now.

For overclockers, the story is a bit less clearcut, depending on how many heat issues the NV35, and its new board design, actually fix, and then its resultant overclocking characteristics (the NV30 had effectively none, beyond the Ultra...but the changes for the NV35 might allow atleast RAM to significantly differ in this regard).

Well, we will see in less than 1 hour where my/your moral standing is ;)

No we won't - a few more days to go still. :)

Interesting that the reviews are going to be pitching the R350 w/Cat 3.4s vs 5900 Ultra w/Det 4x.xx. I suspect the NV35 will pull far further ahead with the Det50s, although I'm not quite sure exactly what those drivers involve in terms of "optimisations" yet.

P.S. I presume the 6.14.10.6343 build forms the basis of Cat 3.4. Is that correct?

Evildeus.... just for you! ;)

Wishin' and Hopin'
Adapted from the song by Ani Difranco

Wishin' and hopin'
And thinkin' and prayin'
Plannin' and dreamin'
Each night of its charms
That won't get it into your arms
So if you're looking
To find love that you can share
All you gotta do is
Hold it and buy it and love it
And show it that you care
Show it that you care just for it
Do the things that it likes to do
Play your games just for it
Cause you won't get it
Thinkin' and prayin',
Wishin' and hopin'
Just

Wishin' and hopin' and
Thinkin' and prayin'
Plannin' and dreamin'
Its playing will start
That won't get it into your cart
So if you're thinkin'
Of how great true love is
All you gotta do is
Hold it, and buy it
And install it and love it
Just do it
And after you do
It will be yours.

Show it that you care
And just for it
Do the things that it likes to do
Play your games just for it
Cause you won't get it
Thinkin' and prayin'
Wishin' and hopin' just…..

   ;)

The fact I remember this song is really sad.......

Errrrr more memory really does not get my interest going. Now had they ramped up the clock a bit then it would have been a better product. Now I just dont feel that for the extra money the memory buys you a lot of wow in todays games....just my $0.02

Yeah, if you say so. Don't forget to say the same thing in 30 minutes (oups  ) 100$ more for what? :?

Jeez....guess the french have no sense of humor........ :D
Hehe we have, but always the same humor is a bit .... ;) (i think this song suits more Bitboys & co  )

Architecturally this looks interesting (and why is NV35 memory clock so slow???)
