R520 launch delayed?

interesting. this would bump everything?

move R520 to August-September

and R580 to late winter early spring (2006)

R600 to fall 2006

??

If it is true, they say it is not a technical problem but a marketing strategy, I think it is a big mistake for ATI at this point. They are losing to Nvidia at performance Directx9 sector and the reason is not because they don't have SLI.
They abondaned the AGP market which is still the biggest graphic market. Their insisting push of PCIe shift was too early I think.

Well If we remember correctly, rule of thumb is new generation every 18 months. Last generation was "launched" in May, which was the 5th month of the year. (5+18) - 12 = 11 or November.

Is it jus tme or are product cycles getting shorter and shorter?

No argument from me on that, I thought it was a mistake when they did it and I'm glad that they changed their strategy and are pandering to the AGP crowd once again.

I think they did the big PCIe push more for OEM builders than enthusiasts, but they pushed their OEM PR on the enthusiasts trying to just make it all one big jump and it blew up in their faces a bit.

I don't know about this delay rumor, but if it's true it would explain a couple of things to me.

Well, Orton still promised the financial analysts a doubling of revenue in the July-Aug quarter. Unless they were counting on MVP to do that (which seems a bit much to me), then this kind of delay for R520 would have to have been unexpected. Financial analysts (and the market) tend to punish you for misleading them, so if such a delay is really in the cards, and means they will miss their guidance, it is not something that would be undertaken lightly or for trivial reasons.

Edit: Add another stick on the "smells like NV30" fire if this is true. Man, I hope that isn't where we're going to end up. Tho it will be an interesting case study to see if ATI handles it more-or-less the same way that NV did in that ugly place.

He might be counting on the revenue increase from the flood of X800 XLs in both AGP & PCIe that are flooding the market right now, or sales thru OEMs are going thru the roof.

(I don't follow the OEM stuff too much, those cards are just sad to me now. :( )

Mebbee. I guess we'll see if the other shoe drops (a warning that they'll miss their guidance).

Heh, my best indicator that there might be some truth to this rumor is that some friends of mine at ATi who usually reply almost instantly to my e-mails have been suspiciously silent for a few weeks....whenever that happens there is always either something up or they went on vacation.

(And they usually mention before they go on vacation...)

Like you said, we'll see when we see. I ain't in no hurry believe it or not, I'm still pretty content playing around with the latest hardware. ;)

Do you really believe there is a flood of x800xl's in the market Digi? Because here in Europe 6800GT's are still easier to find and cheaper too than X800XL's.
X800XL AGP that is.

I was planning to wait until computex see if it would make sense to wait for R520 for my next upgrade. If it is pushed back until fall there is no reason for me to wait for it or to give my AGP set up away for only AMR, SLI or anything.

Right this moment 6800 GT's are going for really cheap. It is tempting.

On this side of the puddle you can trip over the X800 XLs in both flavors, I didn't know that wasn't the case in the rest of the world.

Please say in germany not europe. In France you can find X800 XL agp for 309 € while the cheapest 6800 GT agp is 359 €. I guess you messed with the 128 mo version against the 250 mo one.

Is the only source for this info The Inq?

For the time being, yes. But the silence at ATI has been deafening over the last couple of months. Something is either very wrong with their multi-VPU implementation or R520 is even more unexciting than DB has been hinting. If they delay the launch to fall, they may as well scratch it altogether and launch R580 instead. Either way, something stinks and ATI isn't talking.

Are you guys referring to personal contacts at ATI or just general public info? Cause Nvidia has been just as silent. Silence isn't necessarily a sign of foreboding. Maybe they're both just keeping their cards closer to their chest.

Please, lets not have another price / availablity discussion - there are other forums here for that.

As for the topic, does it really follow that they need to cross-fire over multiple boards before R520? Doesn't really stack up to my mind. However, R520 - reasonably big chip, change of architecture, new process, mmmmmm, may be a little time needed to understand all the variables? Are either ATI or NVIDIA really streching to get stuff out now? Longhorn is end 2006 and even without WGF2.0 - streaching things out may be arequired at the moment. Alternatively could things really be that bad? If they are going with multi-board why not release 512MB on the X850 instead of X800 XL?

Fair point, what's the use of bringing a better mousetrap to market when your old mousetrap does the job well with the current crop of mice and is selling well.
