PS4 SDK 2.0 brings big improvements to Camera functions & more.

Not sure when it's coming but it seems to be in the plans.

It does seem that the casual market is up for grabs on the Console side right now with no clear path of what console to buy for casual games because Wii U made the Wiimote secondary & Xbox One removed Kinect from the standard package. Seems that either one of the big 3 could go after that market as the prices come down on the consoles Xbox One is losing ground as more Xbox One consoles are being sole without Kinect & the price to get it standalone is $149 so it will be a harder sell than something like a Wiimote/PS4 Camera pack-in game for $50 or $60. PS4 could even be repackaged to include the camera at $399 next year just to establish the PS4 as a casual console.
I agree. I was thinking about the exact same thing lately.

The casual market is already familiar with the wand. The body motion tracking experience of Kinect came with a bang and left with a whimper.

Packing a motion controller and having a nice collection of casual Sports/Party/Family games pre-installed in every console would have done wonders. No need for extra packaging costs. The PS4 would have been casual fan/party ready for everyone and a word of mouth would have been initiated even by owners who arent casuals. Someone else in the family/relationship/friend would try it out. They dont need to go too expensive with these games either. They are simpler in nature than a huge immersive hardcore AAA title that require millions to finish. The motion controller fills the gaps of immersion easily for the casual people. If this works they will easily cover the costs of these free games

The DS4 controller itself is a motion control device. But I am not sure if the form factor of the DS4 would work. A wand like controller is easier to convince due to form

My son loves the little free ninja game add-on for Playstation Room. There should be many more such games. And with online distribution they shouldn't have to cost a tonne. I would already be thrilled with something like a reskinned sports champions, that has some way to also play with the DS3 or both - use the DS3 as a shield and move as Sword could work quite well.

I bet though they can crossover with VR here and we could see a combined push from that direction- games that are great with VR but also use motion tracking in a way that still works in 2D.

And so it begins! PS4 bundles with the camera. Even the 20th Anniversary Edition & a special edition in Japan come bundled with the camera.
At some point they should make the camera a standard pack-in with the system so that devs can make their games knowing that the camera is there.

Speaking of the camera, is there a mount available for it somewhere? There's a socket underneath the fixed section with the USB cord which looks as if it is supposed to accept one, but I've never actually seen any mounts available in stores. It's a bit of a hassle positioning that light-weight camera with that rather stiff and heavy cord coming out of it without one, IMO...

Mine actually came with a tv mount right in the box, not sure if that's what you had in mind though.

For some reason the adjustable mount only comes with the camera in certain regions. NA, for example, includes the mount. I believe some regions in Europe do not have it bundled for some reason or another.

Oh wow. That looks like the crappiest stand ever (no idea how it's supposed to hold the camera to the top of my superthin Samsung set; there's basically nothing for it to latch on to), and jesus, 12 and a half quid, for a tiny piece of plastic. That's highway robbery.

I was hoping for a nice, solid base, preferably weighted. Guess I'll have to continue my baseless existence then, lol! :) Thanks again!

The base of the stand is actually 3 pieces, each foldable. Essentially, the lip holding the camera sits on top of the TV and the 3 legs fold back, or flatten out, as necessary to prop it up. Used it on a thin display over the holidays and it worked quite well. It doesn't actually latch on to the anything (despite how the picture looks).

It will clip to your TV. There's a tiny lip on the front to hook to the front bezel and the stand like thing can be rotated. There is also a third party clip that works in a similar fashion, but cheaper.

I bet Sony saw Kinect 2 last year and thought "we need a stronger lineup against that." And so they start winding things up, pushing sdk updates hard and working on products, and will be delivering from 2015 onwards.

Meanwhile, MS panic about Kinect and continue doing nothing.

2015: Sony win again.

Okay, so they are positioning the GPU as a supplementary compute resources, probably because of its async nature. The small latency tasks are all done on the CPU.

Did they mention the 1.5ms depth calculation/delay will use up the entire GPU time ? Or a CU ? Or just mixed in together with other waves ?

I would like to know this too. It would be really good if the depth processing was able to get somewhat of a free ride in between the standard graphic workloads.

Kinda crazy to think that MS might have to watch the PS4 Camera enjoy the success that they wanted for Kinect 2.0 as time goes by with the Kinectless Xbox One being the standard & not many people seeing a reason to pay $150 more for Kineck 2.0 but willing to pay $40 - $60 for the PS4 camera.

It really is going to be hard for MS to prove that Kinect 2.0 is worth around $100 more than the PS4 Camera. I think they should reintroduce Kinect in a smaller cheaper package sometime in the next 2 years.

Go peddle your anti-Kinect, anti-MS lies elsewhere. Your agenda is not welcome here.

In the US, it's only $100 more. You seem to be incapable of telling any truths when it comes to MS or the Kinect.

What lie? I said pay $150 more to get a Kinect 2.0 I'm talking about after you already have the Xbox One.

Edit: wait a minute you purposely left out the last part just to try and make it look like I said the Kinect 2.0 was $150 more than the PS4 Camera. why would you do that?

The only reason I got the camera was it was essentially free with my PS4 package. Don't get me wrong, Play Room is very cool and can keeps kids entertained for hours, but I'm not seeing anything on the horizon that would be making me think I should buy the camera if I didn't own it already.

I rarely, very rarely, even use the voice controls. And they are very reliable in my experience.

Which could prove to be Sony's biggest advantage moving forward. 2 high speed RGB sensors , a bridge processor that's being sold for $4.90 online & other cheap parts to make up the PS4 camera. At some point they can just bundle the camera in with the console without adjusting the price or bundle it in with a game for $60 or lower. I'm sure twitch streamers wouldn't mind the camera coming with the system.
