PS3 With a Viewsonic VA2226w

Just plugged my PS3 into my Samsung Syncmaster 226BW (1680x1050 native). It reported on an unsupported resolution but in the info menu it reported it was running at 1920x1080, guess it had scaled though. I was quite impressed with the picture quality, almost as good as the 40" Bravia it's normally plugged into.

I also too run a monitor "HDMI to DVI cable" for my PS3. Just make sure that the monitor supports HDCP, I know some of the SOYO's monitors DO NOT SUPPORT IT. I picked up a Spector 22" HD with HDCP support and also can run full 1080p. Cheap I thought for the price of $299.00 I payed about a month ago.

Crime it is to watch the PS3 on a SD TV, why sony includes the composite cable is a joke!!...Ha!!!, thats like running a NitroFunnycar on regular gas. You must see the PS3 running in HD. At 1080p the graphics are great, so much rich detail, most games play at 720p though but the picture is still just as good to me.

I have yet to to get a good nights sleep since COD4 came out. I am hooked on the multiplayer, haven't been this hooked since the day's of SOCOM 2!.

Why 1080i?

Well, it appears that when you connect an HDMI to DVI cable the 360 some how does not see this as a connection to an HDTV and will offer resolutions to select from (the same VGA resolutions in fact) instead of allowing you to select from 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. So, I'm guessing it's 1080i based on a lack of option to select between "i" or "p".

The artifacts I see are in the form of bars all over the screen. Not only that, but you apparently lose clarity as well because when I step down to 1280x768 I notice a definate improvement in clarity.

Ah, that's a shame. In that case there is little for me to win then from an HDMI 360, except better colors. 1080i also explains your bars and less clarity then, because with 1080p that wouldn't and shouldn't have been the case (as you can see from my shots, that's certainly not the case when using the PS3 at 1080p anyway)

Arwin,

Little for you to win by going to HDMI? How is that? I can tell you that I was VERY skeptical of any improvement I might get by going to HDMI. But compared to component and VGA which I've tried before it (and I was sold on VGA), it's DEFINATELY worth upgrading to.

To me it looks like HDMI takes the best of component's color saturation and VGA's clarity and combines them together while boosting the clarity even further than VGA. I can understand if you're doubtful because I was too. But, it's a win win here, trust me. :)

I think you've missed out on the fact that I have a PS3 which I always connect with HDMI everywhere. ;)

It's just that if I can't get 1080p from my 360 to my 22" monitor like I can with the PS3, I'm not going to go through any financial effort in replacing my 360 with a new one that supports HDMI. Such funds will be reserved for a second PS3 instead, so I can use it in the workroom with a wheel setup and/or when my wife is watching something on tv I don't care about.

Then again, we'll see if that will ever happen, I'll be a dad in a few months. ;)

My bad, I thought you already had an HDMI enabled 360, but simply hadn't purchased a cable for it yet. I see where you're coming from now though and fully understand.

In so far as kids are concerned, congrats! I've been a dad for 6 years now(been married 15 years) and I can say that my 6 year old son and 3 1/2 year old daughter are better than I had ever hoped for when it comes to having kids. So anyway, enjoy being a new dad! ;)

Anyone that fools themselves into thinking that a kid or 2 wont cut into their game time is headed for a rude awakening when the rug rats finally arrive. :)

I know exactly what it's like to have less time for gaming. Heck, I had to retire from over 10 years of game development and cut down on my gaming time just to keep the peace.
