PS3 System Update 3.30

Plain 2D version upgraded to 3D for free, old?!

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=247627

Sony has said that they won't do auto 2D to stereoscopic 3D conversion. I'll approach this rumor with suspicion.

"PS3 is getting a completely redesigned XrossMediaBar. Like totally new, not just like new columns and stuff like – totally redone."

so if this is true, is it far fetched to think this includes Google TV?...along with Chrome?....I don't know about the Android applications though.

You know what ? I'd love to add Google TV search capability to PS3 since I don't like NetFlix's standard UI (Too hard to find movies I want).

I'd be surprised if PS3 uses the same UI as Google TV -- unless they revamp the web browser. I have heard that it is non-trivial to port Chrome to PowerPC because of the JavaScript compiler and all the optimizations they do. I remember some Google engineer investigated this issue and shelved the idea.

PS3 Remote Keyboard software available (for any Windows PC, not just VAIO):

All you need to do is download a piece of software called Remote Keyboard with PlayStation 3 , run the Wizard that will register your notebook with with PlayStation 3 and Vola! you are ready to rock your PS3. Your touchpad becomes a mouse pointer if you use a browser and your navigation arrows will help you jump through the various PS3 XMB menus. Of course the biggest perk is the keyboard use, so you can relocate yourself to PlayStation HOME and start chatting with the help of your keyboard easily.

Anyways, head over here and get your software and have fun with your PS3! Hopefully Remote Play which is another piece of software will be available soon as well.

Tried it. Doesn't work on my nokia branded netbook. Installed fine but when I try to launch it I get error message: "This software cannot be used on your computer". (yes, I have bluetooth enabled if someone should ask)

Aye, I checked the comments and they all said can't be used on their non-VAIO PCs. Dang !
Where is Geo Hotz when you need him ?

What a stupid waste! Firstly running a laptop/netbook to provide a KB+M is a bit extreme, and then they go and cap it to VAIO only? Is anyone seriously going to choose VAIO over other brands because it also allows them to type into PS3?! A niche of a niche product, why even bother creating it?

It may be a part of a larger API, and instead of just sitting on it, they decided to release it and watch consumer reaction and adoption. Fun little experiment, if you ask me. I'd be really interested to see the numbers (downloads, use, continued use, etc). They may just be wondering how many people have Vaios around their PS3s (that are also willing to download and install this App :p)..

That would be a cool idea. In fact, it would complement Sony's "open" motion controller patent. I'd love to hook up iPad with the PS3. 5 years ago, I didn't think keyboard would be used in the living room. Now I'm not so sure. I use it frequently in XMB, and with Google TV, I think it may build its own little momentum in some families.

If this was an experiment, it has to be some (very limited) VAIO specific behavior. They will get significantly more usage responses if they open it up to all PCs, Macs and other devices.

And then they would have to provide support for it to all of those additional users. I think that may be the limiting factor here. I wouldn't be too surprised if the group that pushed this project/experiment through, only got it green lit by limiting it to Vaios (to limit testing/support cost). It may yet still be limited to only certain Vaios, I dont know if that's been confirmed yet.

It doesn't have to be supported to be released on other PCs. Make it officially available only to VAIO, but don't lock it to that hardware so that any PC can run it as is, no gaurantees.

RemotePlay works for non-VAIO PC now with this patch:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/18/...e-play-working-on-non-vaio-machines/#comments

courtesy of a developer who goes by the handle NTAuthority, who has managed to get Remote Play to work on any machine -- any machine that can run Windows 7, at least. NTAuthority's patch allows Sony's VAIO Remote Play app to run on non-VAIOs, and from the reports we're seeing in forums it even works on a Windows VMware instance hosted on a Mac.
