[PS3] Resistance 3
Chk out their latest podcast. Its about the making of Resistance 3. Very Cool podcast and they discuss in length the new processes they are using to make R3. Like having a graph for every level that marks out the Beats of that level, the emotional as well as gameplay highs and lows. it was better described in the Games(TM) article but in the podcast they discuss a lot more about how they went about it.

They say the game has been playable from start to finish since Sept, and nows time to bring it up graphically and otherwise to AAA level, one game level at a time.
More info in the podcast, nice one, listen to it.

Its the only podcast I have subscribed to, as they always talk sense. Most of the other podcasts from websites are just curse words and useless talk.

RFOM SP has small gameplay sections interrrupted by narrations frequently, which can be annoying for newcomers. In some sections, it reminded me of the original Halo. I didn't like it at first too until I played the online mode with the GAF clan. Then came back to replay the SP on higher difficulties. It clicked the second time. The higher difficulties are more fun. The online was pure awesome sauce because I could make so many moves depending on how tough the opponents are.

mmm... I'll have to give it a second chance then. I didn't make it much past maybe level 3 or something. The last thing I remember was coming across those scorpian creatures coming out of the ground or something. :s

I did make it quite a bit further in the second game though I got stuck on the part with the floating bubbles creature (when you're finally able to zap it). I just couldn't turn and move quickly enough as soon as I lured the creature into where it needed to be, or I'd do it successfully twice and then fail utterly and have to start all over. It was a very frustrating 2 hours before I gave up. :| So I hope they have a better take on the boss battles. I generally hate them in shooters though because they tend to be very one-dimensional in how you defeat them (like the end boss in Uncharted 2 XD).

Like, I didn't mind the first "big enounter" with the giant robot walker cuz it felt more like just a military target, and it wasn't so blatently repetitive (i.e. do this thing X times the same way, it repeats itself X times, and then it's dead). The encounter could have used a bit more freedom, in terms of how to take it down and also movement, but the other boss battles (sea monster, giant creature on the platform etc) just got tired after the first loop of actions. Since the encounters can be on a large scale, it feels unnecessarily claustrophobic when confined to a small arena with your basic weapons.

Level 3 seems pretty early. Have you gained the power to recharge your health yet ? i.e., have you been infected ?

I think I ran backwards so I could see them.

You mean the Chicago bridge in R2 ? I am not a huge fan of R2 bosses. They needed more time.

R:FOM boss fights are absolutely totally much(raised to the power2) better than R2 bosses. R2 bosses are boring and lame, R:FOM boss fights are difficult and engaging.

FOM didn't really have boss fights. Just introductions to the bigger enemies (the first Titan, Stalker, widowmaker, angel..) that were then later worked into normal gameplay.

Well, there were many instances of just me and a lone big boss in R:FOM. I am calling those as boss fights. Like me in Stalker against a Goliath. Me on foot against a Stalker and a just a small shed in the centre.etc, etc.

Yeah, that fight in the snow was pretty good.

Resistance 1 really was pretty decent - apart from hitting a difficulty spike really early on, it was a smooth and just-right challenge for me. Hopefully they can capture some of that in Resi 3 again.

RFOM is primarily a grunt-fight game. The Hybrids' AI challenged the player rather well.

I think the Goliath, first Stalker, last Widow Maker, and the church swarm combat are memorable "boss" fights.
The first Angel encounter had no boss but I remember that segment well.

EDIT:
Actually, I remember the combat better by location. The shopping mall is interesting too.

Well, the fight against the stalker(the 2nd one?) where there's a small structure in the centre of the level totally qualifies as a boss fight too. it was the most difficult one for me. It was just you against a Stalker and very very little cover.

Also, at one place , i think when we enter the snow areas, there's a fight involving 2 stalkers and then a widowmaker after that. it pretty much can be a called a boss fight too. Unless, of course you guys look at boss fights as singularly one v/s one.

Anyways, all the "Major Encounters which had a higher difficulty than regular play and involved a bigger enemy" were better and more difficult in R:FOM than R2. in R2 , the boss fights were easier than regular play, which I think totally destroys the whole concept of a boss fight.

I am sure they must have noticed that too and will remedy it in R3. They have kept a whole year for polishing that game :D !

Yes, I remember that one. It's one of my favorites.

I also remember another boss fight where you fight one (?) giant Angel and a bunch of Hybrids shooting at you from pillars.
That's in R1 right ?

That's the first meeting where you get to toast Angel butt. That was in R1 and a grand pagga it was!!

I thought the first meeting was when Hale met the "caged" Angel in the abandoned subway ?

EDIT: Oh ok, you meant the first time Hale get to fight an Angel for real.

My problem with Resistance 1 is how weak the weapons are. The carbine felt like a BB gun. I thought the mechanics of Resistance 2 were much better...except they decided to go with the Halo dual-weapon system instead of the 1-man arsenal style of the first.

I think the sci-fi fictional elements are very, very poorly done. I still can't figure why the Chimera are assaulting people with guns and massive tank-walker-things when a Beetle Torpedo is an instant win. The human weapons, uniforms, and gear look all wrong. And by "wrong," I mean they don't look like they even could be real, not in a fictionalized 1950s, and not ever. The carbine looks absurd. "Let's put all these ridges and divots on it because those look cool, and then a wooden stock because it's the 1950s!" Capelli's toboggan hat is totally out of place. The contrast here is with Killzone 2, where the armaments are fictional, but look very much like something a future H&K or Izhmash would come up with.

I can't remember the feel anymore. I remember it's not bad (pretty accurate). To balance its average damage, the Carbine has 50mm (?) grenade launcher, which is usually an instant win in MP.

IMHO, Chimera + BullsEye is probably the most versatile weapon in R1.

I agree ! But R1 was pretty good at playing up the atmosphere. I also liked the Hybrid AI. R2 is better in some areas, but feels mostly like a different game to me. I prefer R1's gameplay and colors over R2.

I felt the opposite, even though the R2 carbine does more damage per shot. They shouldn't have messed with it's accuracy and range. The R2 carbine is like any other standard assault rifle in any game. It lost what made it unique within the weapon set.

I hope we get some defensive weapon back in R3, like the Sapper we had in Rfom.

I only really played the SP and co-op in R2. I played the competitive MP a little bit and thought it was a joke. It had hideously imbalanced weapons and an absurd system of only letting you get XP if you play with their presets. I played one round where I got some absurdly high K/D ratio by using the sniper rifle and camping in one spot...and quit for good.

I just felt like it took way, way too many bullets to kill a Chimera in R1. The things simply did not die in any reasonable amount of time. High-velocity chunks of lead are deadly. To me, that overshadowed any of the game's positives.

In SP ? Regular hybrids should have reasonable health, but they may move too much -- if the AI decides to be evasive. At one point, I got stuck at a choke point for a while… until I decided to storm in to melee his *ss. The hardened hybrids have longer health.

I like to switch weapons in SP. Auger, BullsEye, shotgun, etc. I have some vague recollection of an electric gun but can't be sure if it's R1 anymore.
