[PS3] Resistance 3 [SPOILER ALERT - Contains R2 story discussion]

makes sense will killzone 3 out the same year.

I think its poor planing on sony's part with these two. Febuary 2011 is great for killzone 3 but i think they should have pushed resitance to febuary 2012. It makes sense to have something to keep gamers online after the COD of the year starts to loose steam . I think resitance 3 will just get lost in whatever cod launches

And who is making this COD in '11 that's going to avalanche everything else? I'd say they (Insomniac) have more to worry about from UC3 coming out in Nov than from some rushed to production COD by some no name put together studio. I'd say the COD franchise has seen its last release where other studios give it an uncontested launch.

That looks like such an improvement over the R2 engine! Its amazing to see the progression devs are making in using the PS3s hardware, and all the insomniac games from R1 to R3 and through the R&C series highlight that so well.

Is it me or does it have a far more serious feel to it? R1 conveyed a sense of surprised hopelessness whilst R2 just felt a little too cartoony with moments of pure despair (radio broadcasts) thrown in. This just feels like its gone back to the R1 feel with a much superior way of imagining the story.

Err, people said people wouldn't buy the Treyarch COD too. Now Black Ops outsold MW2 by 30+%.

The next installment will have the Infinity Ward name back at the least, regardless who's left there.

But in general, I dont think you can really worry about avoiding COD. If anything the September release is probably already a nod to that, just like Halo. You probably dont want to launch in November.

As for the Resistance 3 trailer, it is surprisingly impressive after the lackluster screens. More impressive than the Uncharted 3 trailer for me. Although some parts featured ugly standard chimera like the past games that did not look too good.

One thing strikes me a little odd though, Insomniac said this on twitter about the trailers real time-ness:
And just for all you asking, the gameplay footage in the Resistance trailer is all real-time in-engine - no trickery there.

I'm sure it's nothing but "in engine" often is used for less than real time gameplay, like the Reach VGA trailer. Like I said, I'm sure it's nothing. I am not sure how you would precisely define real gameplay in words anyway. "Real time gameplay?"

The keyword there is "real-time". Sometimes the scenes may be shot from non-gameplay camera angle, for story telling or promo. I think they mean the videos are all generated by the engine in real-time, WYSIWYG style.

Now if I may suggest, Insomniac, can I have a beta code pretty please ? The SP game is playable from beginning to end now right ? If you need help tuning MP, just saying... ^_^

The standard U3 trailer doesn't show any danger or threat, but we thought that the dunes behind Nate are painted. ^_^
I supposed it's getting harder to tell what's hand painted and what's computer generated in the shot. GT5 has the same "problem" in Photo mode (real photos vs in-game cars)
The question is will we play the same scene in the game.

I like how the sand particles blow over the surface. That's how it should be. It's one of the reasons I  to fight in KZ2 maps. Hopefully, the dunes and moving sands are real levels. The barren desert should be easier to render than U2's cluttered Nepalese city right ? I remember the shadows in U2 are nice looking too (very minor flicker).

Definitely sensed the urgency to jump in over here.

I´m one of the strongest defenders of FoM in the spanish forums I visit, but at the same time I didn´t feel very happy with R2 and its derivative gameplay and the strong Call of Duty déjà vu... From this perspective I´m really VERY happy with the trailer, the opressive atmosphere, the colour palette... I think that the best level in R2 was the forest part, and just because Insomniac focused on tension, uncertainty, and loneliness.

Technically speaking the greatest faults of the old (old really? is this footage product of a deeply rebuild engine?) engine were poor lighting and shadowing, particle resolution and transparencies, and the strong part the insane level of activity that it could provide on screen, with no evident slowdowns. The textures were a mixed bag, with just very poor art design and choices in R2... something strange because in R1, an older game, the art direction was excellent...

Those problems seem somewhat attenuated in the video. The particles are just another league, transparencies have more resolution (in R2 they were simply too poor) and the most important thing is that light seems to cast shadows, but taking into consideration that the shadowing in R2 was extremely inconsistent (switching off without knowing exactly why) I think we should wait and see more footage. Popping, LOD and other aspects are impossible to clarify because of the foggy screens.

I believe that this is a game in which Insomniac have to proof themselves that are in the mood again and that with a 3-year lifecycle are just in the middle of the hot spot: a game well designed, technically comparable with the big mounsters around there.

I´m definitely supporting them just because Ratchet and the "extremely" satisfying Fall of Men deserve so. FoM was something like a shock. I played it well into the generation, and suddenly I found myself playing something between HL visual narrative and hyperclassic gunplay... the weapons ring, the way the life was accounted, the waves of enemies and the way the different weapons interacted with them and the scenery... a extremely creepy mod of Serios Sam at times, the concept was a winner for me (the old desing was fresh, believe it or not). And the on-line was extremely sweet, fun, simple and direct.

The hopes are high. Go Insomniac.

The gameplay section (which obviously wasn’t live action) was all totally in-engine and real-time. Some of it was with a director’s camera, but if the gun was in Capelli’s hand, that’s us playing the game at Insomniac this past week!

It completely plays into the story why he ends up in the Arena with only a sledgehammer… stay tuned!

In many ways, it’s a best of both worlds. The story is a darker, more focused road trip, but uses the in-engine cinematics that R2 really excelled at. The tone is darker like RFOM, but also has some of that Americana that you saw with the christmas decorations in the flooded city, football stadium, etc.

I think it takes the best of both and combines them.

Since there is a sledge hammer, there must be melee in the game right ? ^_^

Very nice looking trailer. Didn't like the first game, never tried the second. This one is on my radar. The second game had some cool sounding multiplayer modes. Could turn out to be something I'd want.

I don't see how the trailer can be 100% representative when looking at the screens. Apparently they're different builds, but still skeptical.

Is the trailer special visually ?

I like it only because I can relate to the atmosphere and gameplay in the trailer. It reminds me of RFOM.

Looks pretty good so far. I like monsters that don't look like Zombies or Hellspawn.

No it didn't look like a target render with amazing IQ, but I feel there's a noticeable difference in fidelity and style between the trailer and screens. That would be an impressive leap between builds IMO.

I enjoyed the first game, but we only played it split-screen coop. Didn't like the second game. As ever, if this game what's a look in with me, it'd need to offer a great coop experience, but chances are very high it won't get a look in with everything else being released.

On the contrary I enjoy RFOM alone. Co-op diluted the experience for me, whenever we tried. Its a matter of choice whether you want to let it pass or not, but I do agree that next year is too loaded with Infamous2, UC3 MS:Apocalypse and The Last Guardian. R3 will have to prove itself for people's cash.

Insomniac posted this link at FB. New screens and gif. Screens don't look as good, though, the video had a better effect.

I played the first one for quite a while with my brother in split screen. Neither of us was really getting into it. It was kind of nice that it felt like an oldschool shooter, but neither of us found it captivating in any way. Never tried the 2nd title to see how it changed, but their weird co-op skirmish mode seemed interesting. I'm a big fan of horde/firefight type gameplay.

RFOM SP has small gameplay sections interrrupted by narrations frequently, which can be annoying for newcomers. In some sections, it reminded me of the original Halo. I didn't like it at first too until I played the online mode with the GAF clan. Then came back to replay the SP on higher difficulties. It clicked the second time. The higher difficulties are more fun. The online was pure awesome sauce because I could make so many moves depending on how tough the opponents are.
