PS3: Ps2 emulation screws up the image quality

Quite interesting pictures there (from a technical perspective). Looks like their deinterlacer that runs on the 480i games might have a bit/sign error. My guess is that for every 4 horizontal pixels, two of them are in the wrong order. Instead of getting 1234 they are getting 1243 instead. A strange problem indeed.

It sounds like interlacing is the problem. Some chap mentions he tried some game in Progressive and the problem was solved.

Sony should do a total overhaul of their output pipeline, including an OS driven scaler for arbitary scaling, fixed PS2 interlaced output, and ensure that SDTV users have the option to downscale HD graphics.

I've only played one PS2 game so far on my PS3, FFXII, and the first thing I noticed was that it was playing in 480p. I thought that to be extremely odd, considering that there was suppose to be no enhancements for PS2/1 games (currently). Reduced image quality definitely wasn't the 1st thing that came to mind.

I stopped reading after the 1st post. Is there anything in particular from that post that you feel is relevant to my comment? Preferably relevant, and credible.

EDIT

Scanned through and saw a comparison picture of a Square logo. Simply put, that's not the image I get with FFXII via component on my PS3. That, or I'm sitting too far back to notice (but I doubt it).

yes, I was referring the images, as you saw... there's more of them if you check through the thread

I've only tried FFXII on my PS3... but I didn't notice it looking any worse (or better) than what my PS2 outputted. HDMI on PS3 and component on my PS2.

It looked pretty bad regardless (as is typical for ~480i/p games on a 1080p LCD =/). I can't visit gaf at the moment, so I haven't seen the pictures for comparison... but I didn't notice any glaring differences (any differences present weren't big enough for me to notice).

I wish they'd do some scaling or something though -- kind of excited for the software emulation to happen... might have a chance to get some PQ improvements there.

Why do people keep using Emulation when referring to the PS3 BC? Sony couldn't get Emulation working so they used a hardware solution. There's no emulation going on. It's simply BC issues.

Sorry, pet peeve.

...then it wouldnt be a BC issue either

but back to the subject...it doesnt happen on everyones ps3s, some think it may have to do with overheating but thats just a guess on their side

Then it's simply a hardware issue. Regardless, the PS3 is not emulating the PS2 so emulation is a bad word to use.

Actually, I think they've narrowed it down to games that use a weird framebuffer or some sort. Like 512x512. A lot of games seemed to do that for PS2
