ps3 problems (HDMI, audio, etc.)

I don't know where to put this, but I thought we may as well post a thread for people's difficulties with their new ps3's.

My problem may have a simple fix that I'm just not getting, but I can't get audio out over the optical connection when I'm playing games. It works fine when I'm using the OS (XMB or whatever) and watching bluray movies, but once I put a game in the sound cuts out. I had to hook up the media multi-out just to get sound. I thought it might be that my receiver isn't accepting whatever format the game is putting out, but you can limit the formats in the ps3 system settings and different combinations didn't seem to help. Does anyone have any ideas on this, or has had similar problems?

Well as usual with launches, PS3 has had some issues in the forms of overheating and "lock-ups"... Nothing new really...

We have the upscaling issue, we have some HDMI issues where the handshake with HDCP compliant HDTVs just doesn't happen...

Huge PS3 Question- got one but hdmi doesnt work-

Hey guys I just bought a PS3 and i have a 42 inch samsung plasma HPR4272- bought it last year and hdmi doesnt work at all. but composite does- then i read that my plasma has to have HDCP to run hdmi?!?! or only on blu ray- tho when i boot it up nothing comes- then the other funny thing to note is i have 3rd party crappy compoennt cables from my ps2- and plugged those- and i guess the ps3 doesnt like third party crap component cuz it had alot of weird issues- lots of lines going up and down etc, but composite looked fine for what it is (480i) (N) so my question it seems HDMI is out of the question for me As pissed off i am about it- i have a toshiba HL66 lce and the hdmi doesnt work on it either- but i cant find out anywhere one the net if its HDCP compatable or not- or maybe my hdmi output doesnt work who knows- tho i can test that buy pluggin it in at a store which i might sometime- but i dont have a 1080p so i dont really care but i would like some component cables that work properly Are there any set taht people bought at launch? Or some that i should buy? I saw monster is coming out with some ps3 component cables- but i want something now- anyone using somethign that works perfectly? Let me know!!!!!!

Strange. Does the game default to a sound format your receiver doesn't like or something?

I would guess the game should use the OS settings, but check it anyway...

it looks like your component cable is just messed up. try to find another cheap cable. difference between a mosnter and a cheap component cable is not going to be that much
i'm using a rgb scart cable (europe here) and its already much better then the crappy composite cable

HDMI should automatically have you covered with regard to HDCP, I think.

Try holding down the on/off button for 5 seconds when you turn it on, with it connected via HDMI. That seems to solve handshake issues others have been having. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure..have you tested the cable with something else to check it's OK? If it is, and the above doesn't work, it might be time to call Sony.

This is exactly what I was talking about months ago in regards to hdcp...it is a pain in the ass. Try Titanios method, sometimes the order in which you power things on will also help correct handshake issues. Good luck, I have spent days before trying to get HDCP sorted.

I've just seen some similar reports on AVS, so it's not just you. At one time I had an HDMI issue with my cable box that prevented DD 5.1 output over the optical connection to my AV receiver. It went like this (as I understood it): the cable box's HDMI interface would query the TV about sound formats the TV accepted, the TV would say "I don't do DD 5.1", so the cable box would stop doing DD altogether, even over the optical digital cable.

If it's something like that, and you're using HDMI, it should fix it to switch to component video. (Not as a permanent fix, necessarily, but as a diagnostic.)

That's what I was thinking, but I don't know how to check something like that. The receiver accepts DD and DTS so I don't know what format wouldn't work with it.

I'm using an HDMI to DVI cable, so that might be an issue. I'm going to borrow a friends ps2 component cable when he gets back from the thanksgiving break.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I jus think it's shameful that Sony has yet to address the issue publically...that is, let consumers know how (or if) they expect to address the problem. Fixable with a firmware update? New hardware revision? No plans to address at all (other than put it on the software developers to natively support 1080i)...

Apparently, Devs have been well aware of this issue for quite a while, so Sony obviously knows it's a sticky point....

It seems almost all HDMI devices have problems with at least a few TVs. I don't blame sony for that one as it happens to everyone. I am sure most of the other problems will be resolved in a timely manner.

I had HDMI issues as well. My screen would go blank for 2-3 minutes then come back, similar to when you switch to a video with no input coming in.

It went away for a long time, so I called sony support.

The rep told me the PS3 should connect with AV cable first, then configure HDMI after. I started my PS3 with HDMI initially and it recognized it and configured my system automatically. Anyway, I went through the steps to reboot the system and start with AV (and HDMI connected). I configured AV then switch to HDMI.

I haven't experienced any problems. But I think the reason was that my HDMI cord was slipping out the ports.

HDMI problem gone!!!

Hey guys- i went on sony support (phone) and god are they DUMB anyways i god fed up that i just hung up and then snagged on the hdmi cable- what do i find to my surprise? THE PICTURE COMES! it seems my PS3 HDMI cable is very loose not the cable but the input- I dont know if its the contacts but it is loose- but i just wiggle it till i get a picture and itll stay- its worked great and looks amazing- 1080i and 720p wow! Im so happy that i can see thigns- and BD movies look amazing - i bought xmen 3 and mi 3 and they look great!!! only crappy thing which ill have to solve for now- my subs will move the cabinet i guess and its happened only once but the video would cut out and then id have to go back and wiggle it- Ill prob have to tape it to something crappy thing for 600 bucks but at least it works lol- But on the other hand it shouldnt be to hard to replace or get fixed later on. Ill live for now- on to gaming!!!!!

Yes, the connect on PS3 is loose if you push your cable, move your tv, move your PS3, your TV stand shakes it may fall out and you lose picture.

If anyones having problems make sure your not using an "HD compadible" av box. My Joytech 240C sends some kind of false signal when in progressive mode and my tv wont accept it. Randomly the picture will drop out, become garbled etc.

no it doesnt fall out its just loose like i have to wiggle it to get picture to come lol and yes if i wiggle it picture will go away- im sure theyll have a fix for this though cuz i dont want to exchange it (if i can even find one that is lol) and get a system that might have worse problems or internal problems- where as this could be as simple as tightening somthing- or moving it a bit or just replacing the hdmi slot. Its not tat big of a deal though iv ebeen playing for 6-8 hours today and the picture didnt go off like last night- i thikn it was a little loose haha. what a funny crapshoot- but god is Motorstorm and resistance AWESOME. soo much fun and amazing to look at.
