PS3 owners give impressions, details

thanx for the linke. thats a nice impression. can somebody wake him up to cotinue his impressions? :)

Oh my ... anybody still remember the outrage when some dudes smashed a 360 to bits?
"Think about all the starving children in Africa!"

Thats nothing. Remember Daily Radar? They broke a PS2 when people were all going mad to own one. Some people even stole from others. I ll never forget the news when 2 were battling to get in line, until there was only one PS2 available and only one of them got it.....then when he got out of store the other one tried to steal it. Hell broke lose and police got there.

And during all the chaotic demand and shortages, they broke a PS2 into countless pieces and showed it in their site when everyone else was salivating like sturving people from Somalia to own a PS2

I remember an incident in the news where at Christmas in New York a kid was beat up by two men (I think they were armed with sledgehammers) when he was walking home with his PS2.

It sucks how you won't be able to use non-HDCP monitors unless they have component inputs with the PS3 because HDCP is enabled on games too :(

What's the deal with that? Why would Sony enable HDCP for games?

Probably because some titles use licensed material that the copyright owners would like protecting. Maybe music videos (SingStar?), maybe sections from movies. I would expect it's simpler to always have this kind of protection on, rather than risk some developers forgetting to enable it when appropriate.

A little bit more on Blu-ray playback..I think it was a point we debated this before here, possibly:

One thing to add about PS3 BD playback performance.

I fed CEDIA give-away disc which contains 40Mbps MPEG4-AVC streams and PS3 just played them flawlessly, without any stuttering, frame drops nor PQ degradation, even though I saw instantaneous bitrate exceeding over 50Mbps in some spots.

The suspicious about PS3's AVC playback performance just gone.

Yap ! A very useful thread. I decided to chip in too... after lurking in GA for so long. Hope Sony folks are reading it :) Many rough edges but nothing major so far (for me at least).
Number 2 strikes me as a serious fault. An inability to switch to XMB mid game means no ability to respond to friends. You're either playing or communicating, but not both. Given the OS is supposed to run on it's own SPE, multitasking with it seemed on the cards. Fingers crossed this is a launch-game issue where the methods weren't in place in the SDKs.

I think they'll fix this in a future firmware update which at the same time probably curbs/discourages piracy/system hacks. Seems like the smartest way to do things as shown by the PSP. I would say, at the earliest within 3 months or so they might have added some major features through firmware update. This may or may not be one of them.

I was actually looking out for show stoppers after all the negative news about launch units, FUD about Blu-ray and overheating, etc. etc.

The web browser should be swappable in-game (as demo'ed) for shopping :)

For swapping to XMB for messaging, Phil Harrison said if we want it, yell ! I'm counting on the PS3 owners to do that job. I missed the pre-order period.

EDIT: Ok, he said "express your desire"... may be not yell :D

the browser should be swappable so when I get stuck in some game, I can quickly look up solutions!

Within a game, a player ought to be able to duck out to do messaging (audio+visual comms too) and check the web for sure. Some things like changing user wouldn't make sense. Other things like running a photo slideshow don't make much sense ot me, but the option would be nice just to give a more 'complete feel' to the OS - don't deny options you don't have to.

An update could see the messaging overlay the game, and maybe have an access point in games for browsing the web? So perhaps full XMB drop out/in isn't needed. But it'd make sense, and give a clear and obvious interface for all PS3's functions.

Plus the ability to stop a game partway through and carry on where you left of, like PSP or DS, should always be there IMO. And if that feature its there, it can be used to enable a drop to XMB and back.

Not a single mentioning of a 4:3 resolutions so far. :(

I would really like to see some impressions with standard monitors and tv-s...
