PS3 HD capacity?

I only have 33GB free left on mine!
Whoever thought 20GB was plenty!

you know.... they do have a delete button. ;)

agreed 20 GB is not enough especially as we are moving into the DL'ed digital HD movies and TV as MS has already. I'd be shocked if we don't see some sort of large capacity HDD for 360 soon as some people need it.

20GB is plenty for me right now since I don't take advantage yet of the 360's HD movie/TV downloads and such, I just DL demos and trailers which I usually delete after buying the full game or deciding against it and 20 gig is plenty for that stuff.

Eventually I'll want more space.

I think it may be a different situation on the X360. On PS3, the games are not limited to a small size. For instance, Tekken 5 is I think a 900meg download.

full game?

yea, if it's a full game (PSP?) then you would definitely need/want to keep it on your HDD.

XBL arcade games are limited to 100MB iirc (50 maybe?) but demos are over a GB but are usually only temporary storage.

I think 100GB plus HDD will eventually be a necessity. I see why MS went with the swappable proprietary HDD since it's designed to be used as portable storage (just un-clip it and take it to a friend's house and slap it onto his 360 to use all of your game saves, Gamertag, demos, arcade games and such).... but it limits the user from upgrading the HDD.

Hm... I suppose you can export/backup selected "stuff" to a USB media for portable storage. Once you lose that hard disk, the saves are gone. I feel safer carrying a duplicated copy (not the entire hard drive).

Also if it's an always-on machine, the hard drive may come in handy while attached to PS3 or Xbox 360.

Yes, I was talking about the full games, but I suppose you could talk about the demos as well. I think eventually PS1 games will also be offered for download, and so this only further pushes for bigger harddrives on the PS3.

I'm sure they don't mind collecting a nice premium for the propriety harddrive either. Afterall, they could have made it just as convenient if the drive inside the snap case was easily upgradable.

why didnt m$ make HDD standard??? because of these core systems it seems microsoft cannot do certain things, like hard caching, game installation etc

Close friends of Microsoft argue that the HDD is too expensive and will be a hindrance to long-term plans of cost reduction.

But would a cheapo xboxthreesixzero without a HDD sell, if the core xb360 without a HDD hasn't sold that well?
Wait, now something doesn't quite make sense...

If microsoft starts offering larger HDDs(40,60,80,100,etc), then I can see the cores selling better.

Though if the premium 360's get a HDD upgrade included in the package, then I dont know

I don't understand what you're trying to say

XBL demos have been over 1 GIGabyte several times now and the HD movie/TV XBL Marketplace downloads are obviously several Gigs.

I think he means the 50MB limit of XBLA titles (I think it's 50mb anyways). Lemmings on the PSN would be the equivalent of an XBLA game as it's pretty much a "full game" and not a demo. There is a demo of Lemmings for example which is much smaller than the "full game".

oh he was talking about the PS3 demo compared to running the full game on 360 Live... got it. thanks BB.

I have heard a rumor that the size of those games will change to larger eventually.

Either way it is not any physical limitation of LIVE that is the issue which is what confused me with his post. It is a distinct choice made by MS to limit those game sizes.

Yes, but isn't that choice based on wanting to support Live Arcade titles without needing an HDD? Which is why they're capped to 50 MB? If the HDD was standard, they wouldn't need that cap, not for storage reasons anyway. The cap also serves other purposes.

Pretty much. IIRC the cap mainly comes from the memory cards.

Even though I own a PS3 for more than a month now, I'm still learning about PS3.

I think to be fair to both Xbox 360 and PS3, we should look at the "total" package instead of individual bullet points to understand what they truly offer. There are as usual pros and cons for both.
e.g.,

PS3
===
* Standard built-in hard drive for all
- Upgradable to other 2.5" SATA HDD cheaply
- Larger cache, capacity or faster spin speed (Check heat dispense if spin speed is
too high).
- 3.5" drive also possible if you lay PS3 on its side and don't mind an ugly, external HDD.
It offers more choices and at an even lower cost than the 2.5" ones (This is the route I
intend to go since my PS3 is now in my study room. Need some more exploration and
validation though).

* Basic assumptions: HDD is perpectually plugged in to PS3 for "always-on" applications.
Even when you're out, say at a friend's place, you should be able to use a PSP to access PS3
remotely in the future (March 07).

* Large downloadable games (e.g., back catalog) can serve entire PS3 userbase due to
standard built-in HDD.

* Game sharing:
- Blu-ray Games: Take the game disc, copy the game saves to a USB thumbdrive and bring it !
- Downloadable Games: Copy the game saves, re-download the game at friend's place, and
continue gaming
- I don't know whether it's good to pull out the HDD and plug it into your friend's PS3 yet.
It's possible from hardware perspective, but I don't know if there are software checks.
Somebody will try some day.

* Extended form of game sharing:
- Create a game-sharing account, pool the money and share downloadable games with 4 other
friends.

* What to do after you upgrade (This will apply to both systems in the future):
- Use the old drive as a portable storage, or personal backup
- Sell it

yes that's true afaik.

I was just pointing out how that differs from being a failing of live. As I said it was a choice for whatever the reasons. :D

PS3 stuff

Oh I agree and I appreciate how PS3 handles the entire HDD situation much better than 360.

Of course I'm also one of those that knows that the Core (no HDD) may be the killer hardware package at $199 one of these days which was most important for them going into this gen.... so I forgive them from a pure business decision POV.
