PS3 firmware 4.45 bricking consoles

Apparently it's not bricking beyond repair, but your OS won't boot up properly.

Also seemingly from GAF, mostly Playstations with 1TB or higher have been affected.

I'll be sure not to install it though (as Playstation Plus has no doubt already downloaded it for me).

So, it's not really bricking then. It's just a massive pain in the ass. I'm not sure what the procedure is for swapping drives, but that's basically what you'd have to do to fix it.

Wahaha, fortunately I completed TLoU.

They seem to have pulled 4.45. My office PS3 is 4.41 this morning. Insists that it has the latest firmware.

My home PS3 is probably autoupdated to 4.45 by now.

Paystation Plus doesn't auto install firmware, only auto download.

I think you can install a firmware from recovery mode, by holding the correct button(s) at start up, so no drive swapping. I recently learned about this mode when I had to do some file cleanup when my PS3 was crashing intermittently and regularly.

They've pulled the firmware until they can sort it out. I'm running 4.41, and it says I'm on the latest release.

The problem only seems to affect PS3s with user-upgraded hard drives. Specifically, hard drives of 500GB or larger. It's not 100% of the time, so if you might have been okay, but from what I could tell, every failed unit had a non-factory hard drive in it.. there were no reported cases of the firmware causing an issue if you still had the factory hard drive.

It's moot now, since they've pulled it. I'll update when they put it up next, presumably in a couple of days, and go from there. My system's still stock, so I'm not that worried.

I really wanted this one, too.. this is the update where they finally added the ability to turn off Trophy notifications.

I just installed a 1TB hard drive too. Thankfully, they pulled it before PS+ auto-downloaded it and someone else in my apartment triggered an install

It's an amusing theory, but a bit silly when the PS4 isn't for sale yet, and won't be for at least 5-6 more months ...

It's just a long play psychological trick. Like MS pulled with Millenium and Vista...

(I forgot the lolz on the first one!)

Oh I know that wasn't serious - I'd just seen it a few times before, and thought it was silly rather than funny. ;)

sony have botched their PS3 FW multiple times.

Maybe learning from experience, is there a chance that sony will make PS4 firmware able to rollback? a-la Windows system restore?
do they have any motivation to make it?
