PS3 at E3

I think most were expecting some playable demos. There's no more relevant big show between now and PS3 launch that I know of. (well, if PS3 launches in November... Maybe E3 '07? ;) ). Of course this is the Inquirer and there's no substantiation to this rumour.

PS : Shouldn't the title be PS3 not at E3?

Are you taking for granted a news piece from The Inquirer based on a rumor originating from Spong?

Seriously, geo... I know that you're not aware of the reputation of Spong, but you know L'inq.

No, that's why I dragged it in here for comment from folks I know are following events on this quite a bit closer than I am.

Are you denying, or just tossing on the "unproven" pile?

First they have to unveil the new controller at the pre-E3 conference, then they'll roll some units into demo booths, to prevent leaks.

For lazy people, here's a quote from the source, Spong, if it's not completely forged...
We put these concerns to Sony Computer Entertainment America, who while assuring us that the PlayStation 3 would be in playable form, did indicate that a massive open floorplan packed with hands-on units was unlikely. "We have always said that the PlayStation 3 will be playable at this year's E3 and that hasn't changed," explained Ryan Bowling at SCEA. "We have a three platform showing this year and of course the PlayStation 2, which is now more popular than ever, will share space with the PSP and the PlayStation 3."

But will the PlayStation 3 be on open play or will it be shown in a similar way to the PSP's first E3 showing? "We are expecting big queues to see the PlayStation 3 and so will be taking great care to manage the crowds in the best way possible. All press will certainly have no problems seeing everything we are showing. This year is going to be huge for us. Not just in terms of what we're showing, but in the major announcements we have planned."

As to how restricted access to the PlayStation 3 will be, we'll find out on May 10th, though SPOnG fully expects demand to go hands on with the system, and its new controller, to greatly outstrip the supply of playable units.

I've actually been checking on these forums all day to see if somebody was going to comment on this "report" because I didn't want to be the one using an Inq story as "proof".

Thanks for taking one for the team, geo! :D

I find this news absolutely shocking, if true. And Spong quotes certainly seem... reasonable and in line with what you'd expect from Sony. Especially if they're trying to cover up PS3 delays. (No, we won't show the PS3 yet.. we're still focusing on the PS2 which is selling better than ever!)

I don't see how they can go from essentially zero presence at E3 to a Nov launch, though.

Heh, no problem. But Vy is right about the quality of the source. So interesting, yes. Data point, yes. "Not proven" in Scotland. . .

Well, I tried to split the difference with "PS3 Anemic Showing at E3?", but it only changed the first post.

After all, it's going to be there. The question is will it be shown with all the glory and thunder we'd expect at this point given where we think it's supposed to be in its lifecycle?

There, did I wobble enuf that time? ;)

If you read the original spong article, you can see the inquirer isn't even relaying it accurately. The only "news" as such here is that some publishers who apparently spoke to Spong don't know how many demo pods they're getting from sony yet, and they fear they may have to demo at least to some degree in a more restricted fashion (necessitated by demoing on their own dev kits, one presumes).

I wonder if the new controler will have any new features to conter strike the Rev (at least in the japan)...

They do have a history of doing that. Peter Moore interview comes to mind...

I don't believe, fwiw. Purely based on the source(s).

Don't forget the power of EyeToy! Remember the cup demonstration? I'm pretty sure SONY will push the EyeToy as a good alternative to the Rev...and it's a peripheral! Not the main/only controller for the system.

I dunno, but personally I'm interested to see where SONY take the EyeToy and whether or not they'll have some more demos or showcase some games for it...afterall, it was a no-show @ GDC.

I think the PS3 will have a heavy presence at E3. Not the way The Inquirer or Spong are stateing it. I just think it won't be as BIG as possible since we've still got TGS. I think the hype will be split between the two. How will they split the hype exactly? I'm not sure.

I'm would not be surprised if this "theory" does have some validity come E3.

It's awfuly early in the process. I think the PS3 will be playable behind closed doors and demos will be shown by devs. Hands on with no more than a few systems and several games at most would not be a surprise to me.

similar to what MS was able to do last year with the same amount of time remaining (and final dev kits still not out).

With sp0ng, you almost don't even have to deny.

One can just simply assume it's erroneous; their reputation is awful when it comes to simply making shit up, or posting shit that others made up, claiming it to be legitimate rumors or even news.

Marketting is everything. Though you brought the product to market first, you released it in the wrong place and it mostly went unnoticed. A recent Mori poll has shown that in people not knowning you had referenced an Inq article, your reputation was higher than if you had. Now you are in the unfortunate place of being behind the market leader (Geo) despite having beaten him to the punch, and with the ignomity of quoting an Inq article severely damaging your street-cred. Unfortunate blunders, indeed...

I'm sure it is. Not having a zillion playable consoles isn't a big thing. As long as there are playable consoles and big screens for the public to view the games on, it's a good showing. If it were all behind closed doors (which the Spong source never said, so the Inq is a corruption of an unreliable source. News doesn't get more third-rate than that!) that'd be a change from what is expected, but that doesn't appear to tbe the case.

Hah! I'd rep you if i could!

No one else picked up on that "very heavy table cloth over the PS3's" comment though. Am i the only one, or does that just doesn't sound right, health&safety-wise?
