1080i is human technology, 1080p is alien technology (did I tell you the story about Ken coming from mars?)

But in all seriousness, don't think there's much difference except perhaps framerate. The picture quality shouldn't be much different but I'm sure some experts (Aliens) can tell you more about that.

I think this topic has been debated quite few times so with search you should find lots of information.

Take a game like Ridge Racer or NBA Live - at 1080p they run 60fps. While 1080i can be upscaled to 1080p if the source uses a 1080p framebuffer (which is fairly common these days), at the same refreshrate it will have only 30fps.

And yes, the high-end videocards can do something similar.

1080i to 1080p isn't upscaling, it is just deinterlacing. And any modren videocard can output both 1080i and 1080p, though in newer games you'll likely want a fast card to get resonable framerate.

Should do via Linux, though mabe not to avi.

Yes in Linux, and sort of yes with XMB, which provides functions for viewing movie files and music files and pictures.
